Hello everyone, I am back again for "Creative Sunday". I will be sharing another tasty recipe today. It's plantain chips and the recipe is my mother's. She is very fond of cooking at home, and does not let us eat outside that much. That is reason, she taught me how to cook Plantain chips step by step, and I will be sharing this yummy crunchy recipe with you all.
Some of you may not what is Plantain chips exactly? Well it's a crispy, savory snack made from green (unripe) plantains. It looks like banana but it's different. I would suggest to avoid ripe yellow or black plantains, if you want something crispy.
2 green (unripe) plantains
1 teaspoon of turmeric powder
1 teaspoon of chili powder
1 teaspoon of flour
Soybean oil (for frying)
1 teaspoon salt (as per taste)
Make sure the Plantains are completely green and when you touch, it must be hard. It must not have any soft spots or mold. The greener the plantain are perfect for crispier chips.
Peel the Plantains and using a boti is easier than using a knife to peel. I know it's gonna be difficult to peel so peel it carefully avoid getting injured.
First take one Plantain and cut off both ends. Do the same with the other one.
Peel of the green skin, slowly. The white skin beneath must show.
Then Slice the plantains into thin rounds, it will fry faster. I would prefer not to wash it.
First take salt and add per to taste
Then add turmeric powder not too much
After that add some chili powder, if you don't like spice then you can skip it.
Lastly add some flour, forgot to add it in the first place.
Mix it all together with your hand.
Pour enough oil into a pan so the slices can float. I'm using Soybean oil, you can use any vegetable oil.
Then turn on the stove, I am using a electric stove. Then heat the oil to 170–180°C (340–355°F).
Don't add too much because making the pan overcrowded can cause it to burn. Fry in Small Batches.
Stir gently with slotted spoon, so they don't stick together.
Fry for 3–5 minutes and make sure to turn the sides of the slices occasionally.
You will know when it's ready because it will turn light golden and crisp when it's ready to serve.
Place them on a place. I did not use any seasoning but you can if you want while the chips are still hot.
These homemade plantain chips are delicious on their own or served with dips like spicy mayo or you can have them with hot milk tea.
They're a simple snack made with just a few ingredients and it doesn't take lot's of time. Anyone can make it at home, instead of having junk food from outside. If you make them at home, I'm sure you'll love every crunchy bite!
