I'm still a student not married and not a mother yet. As I am not a parent so I cannot speak from a parent's experience. But I think this topic is more important than many adults realize. So, I can share from my point of view and the things I have seen around me every day.
Nowadays, everyone has a phone even the kids they all have it and internet access is a must. So, if someone is curious about something they usually search for it on Google and you can say that I have done the same. I still do, if I have something in my mind maybe I'll talk to AI instead of asking my parents or someone else. So, other kids do the same they don't ask their parents. I'm mature enough so I know the difference between right information and false information. The problem is not everyone has the same capability to understand. They do not understand that everything on the internet is true. Like imagine, someone searches in the wrong way then they may find wrong information and unhealthy ideas. Also, it could be a content that is not suitable for their age. That can create confusion instead of helping them.
So, I personally believe children should learn about sex education from trusted adults before they start searching on their own. Look it does not have to be one long and uncomfortable talk. It can be done shortly the way the conversation stays healthy and parents can keep changing the terms as the child grows older. Parents should explain things honestly, using safe words which their children can understand. I believe children learns everything from the surroundings and if they get involved with wrong groups even if we teach them they may learn it wrongly from others. So, the most important things we should always strictly teach them is about consent, accepting rejection, about respecting themselves and others, and how to stay safe.
I know some parents still now can feel uncomfortable talking about these topics. In Asian families, I have noticed they see it as embarrassing or something that should not be discussed between parents and children. I do not think parents should be blamed for feeling nervous. However, staying silent is not the answer because children will still look for answers somewhere else. And one day their child may make wrong decision and ruin someone else's life. In this way, they will lose their child in the future so it's better to teach them when they are young.
If parents cannot explain these topics, then schools should help. I think schools should have proper sex education classes taught by trained teachers in a respectful and educational way. Their main job should be to teach children about safety, facts and health, and making responsible choices instead of making students feel ashamed or afraid to ask questions.
One thing I want parents to understood is that teaching children about sex education does not encourage them to make bad decisions. I think it can help them avoid uncomfortable situations and help them recognize danger. This can also avoid pregnancy at young age. Not everyone will take responsibility for it, unless they are enough responsible and mature. They will be able to protect themselves if they ever face an uncomfortable situation. Knowledge gives confidence, while silence often creates fear and confusion.
In conclusion, the best approach is for parents and schools to work together. Children should have a safe place where they can ask questions without being judged. So, guidance from trusted adults is necessary and one of the most valuable lessons a child can receive.
