Have you ever travelled with so much luggage that you have anxiety? That was me two months ago when I relocated to Ekiti state from Lagos.
I had so much load, everyone I knew and met had something to say about it. I carried three boxes filled with clothes, handbags, books, and toiletries. Then part of it was a camp gas cylinder, and I also carried a portable electric fan.
The one piece of luggage I'll be talking about is the mini fridge I managed to convince my mum to give me. She always had that fridge for a year. It has just been sitting in her room, at some point, I thought it had spoiled since she wasn't using it.
But no, it was in great shape. I thought about it, I was relocating to a different state, where I would be staying alone. Having a fridge wouldn't be a bad idea. So I asked her, and thankfully, she didn't need much convincing; she was on board with the idea.
And so the day to travel came, and I packed my shoes into the fridge, covered it allround with carton paper and tape, and travelled with it all the way.
Before I found an apartment to move into, I had such big plans for the fridge. I was going to plan my meals, and store them in there, I was going to do some healthy smoothies, natural drinks and even water, and store others in it to get chilled.
What I did not anticipate was the electricity issue. The light here in Ekiti is subpar. We don't even get enough light to power our phones well, talk more of powering a fridge long enough for it to be functional.
The least light we get is 3 hours most nights. We also get 30 minutes of light during the day, on good days. When I first moved in, it took a lot for me to adjust and adapt. Because where I was coming from, light was as stable as a four-legged table.
So meeting the complete opposite of it here was shocking and underwhelming. In the beginning, I would plug my fridge in and at least refrigerate some water. But I gave up eventually.
Now, the fridge just hangs out in the corner of my room, chilling 馃槄. I used it as a counter top now, to store my books, toiletries and skin care products.
Whenever I look at it, I'm reminded of the plans I had for it. Before I realised that plans weren't going to pan out. I'm also reminded of how poor the electricity system over here is.
If I were to swap my mini fridge for a whole hour of productivity and focus on my highest priority task, I wouldn't do it. Because I know I could have the two.
Besides, the fridge itself isn't completely useless, even if it's not being used for what it was intended. I still appreciate the fact that I can store my essentials on top of it. That has come in handy for me, especially right now that I haven't been able to get a table and chair yet for my room.
The fridge isn't exactly stopping me from achieving my goals in life or focusing on my priorities. So I will rather leave it.
Besides, who knows, I am hopeful for the new year. Maybe we would get better and more constant electricity.
