Merry Christmas!
Growing up one of my favorite parts of Christmas was decorating cookies. Gingerbread, meringues, and traditional sugar cookies were always our favorites. Not that my mom and I were experts, but it's always a fun part of the season.
The gingerbread houses in particular have been big hits when we've had the time to make them. When I was 11, we tried something new and used upside down ice cream cones as the bases for evergreen trees. It was so popular at my school Christmas party that my teacher even had to make a raffle system for who got to eat the trees.
Sadly, I don't think we have pictures of that house, but we also used that technique for our last build in 2016. Here's a collage I did at the time for my instagram:
The unicorns were a fun addition. It was tricky to get the peppermint shards to stick to the cookies but it turned out really neat. I especially love my brother's "zebra-saurus" creations.
This year we didn't have time to construct something for a holiday party we went to, but my mom was inspired by cookie competitions we watched on TV. So we did some research and played around with royal icing.
I'm proud of how our trees came out, and she did a great job with the candy canes.
We tried a wet-on-wet technique for the stars and snowflakes. My mom was disappointed in them, but I like them for a first try, and they were complimented at the party.
We also made some bears, which were fun, too. They're not as fancy as the other cookies, but I think they're cute.
