Bees buzzed around the garden, collecting the last drops of pollen and nectar before Leaffall. The leaves on the trees had just begun browning, and the flowers dotted around the borders receding. Owain sat amongst the plants, enjoying the late summer sun while children played the street over. He struggled to relax amongst the yelling and boisterous activity just beyond his fence; it seemed that there was a rules dispute in the small game of ball they were playing against the walls along the alleyway.
Owain lifted his mug, blowing on the steaming surface before sipping on the black tea. It was still hot, and the heat burnt the tip of his tongue. He cursed, before replacing it back on the small garden table beside his chair.
“Incoming!” Rhadd announced the approaching of one of their cats, as he leapt on the table beside Owain’s mug.
Owain quickly protected the mug from being knocked over, stroking his cat’s chin with his free hand. “Mind yourself, butti bach.”
“He’s on the prowl, think he spotted a bird sat on the apple tree.” Rhadd pointed to a small finch bouncing around the thicket, almost completely concealed by the leaves. “Easily pleased, is our Reggie.”
