Hungry, alone and shivering in the rain, Tammy contemplated what led her to be stuck two thousand miles from home in the middle of nowhere.
Her clothes were soaked through and her hair was slick with water. The rumble of nearby thunder barely even registered to her as she thrust her thumb out into the middle of the road. The lights of the truck damn near blinded her, but this was her only shot to get back to civilisation.
“Howdy, ma’am. What’s a fine young thing doing out here alone at this time?” The lady’s southern twang was grating, Tammy was sick and tired of hearing it every day.
“I need a lift, can you let me in? I’m soaked.”
“No problem, little lady.” The truck driver popped the passenger side door open, and Tammy dashed around the front of the car, climbing up into the cockpit.
“I need to get back to the city before ten pm.”
“What happens at ten?”
“I’m meant to meet someone.” Tammy rolled the window down and rung her hair out. It was somewhat effective, but the water was getting into the truck and coating the dashboard with a layer of damp. Giving up, she closed the window once more and pulled her seatbelt on.
“I can get you there as soon as possible, but you might miss your friend.”
“That’s fine. Just drop me off at 31st and Hungerfords.”
“Not a problem. I’m headed that way, so I won’t even need to make a detour.” Putting the truck into drive, the engine roared into action as the driver pulled off back onto the barren back roads.
