It started from an adventurer’s misplaced fireball. The ensuing fire consumed 90% of the Forest of Claws and made its way through much of the surrounding farmland. Two-hundred civilian deaths were recorded due to the event, and thousands of livestock were killed. An unknown number of creatures within the forest were killed, but estimates place the death toll in the several millions.
The fire was eventually quelled by the great emerald dragon, Trittania, who emerged from the Fey to stop the chaos that had befallen her realm. Trittania noted that the devastation of the fire had been felt by the mirroring Fey realm: with creatures falling ill; plague and famine; and black rot enveloping the usually peaceful environment. Her actions have been hailed as miraculous, and she is well worshipped by the local druids and elves.
In the centuries following the Great Wildfire, the forest’s regeneration has been a resounding success. The young woods are thriving, home to a diverse population of both flora and fauna. Local Elves have built a wooden sculpture to Trittania in the forest’s centre, now green with moss and vegetation. The dragon has been commemorated in the new colloquial name of the forests: from their original, Eritrous, named for the ancient indigenous tribes; to the Forest of Claws. Trittania’s avatar is said to walk the forest to this day, her form a maiden dressed in red, holding a cloth napkin in her hand.
