It is crazy to watch what is going on at one of the sites where we are luckily not heavily involved. Because we did a small bit of work there, I am on their Whatsapp group so I get to see all the drama unfold.
And all that seems to happen is drama! More than 80% of the communication on that group is negative and revolves around giving fines to the Contractor companies for doing things that are against the rules, pretty much the moment they decide that it is against the rules, or hurrying Contractors up and giving them fines for not finishing in time.
As a Health and Safety Officer I am shocked at the focus of production to the exclusion of safety! Someone is going to get seriously hurt on this site still.
I see photos where someone is moaning about property damage but the workers are completely unprotected.
In the above picture there is an incident... there is a burst pipe or fitting, water is fountaining over the floor. The guy in the picture is trying to protect his tools and stock from the water. Meanwhile there are other hazards at play, like the electrical lead on the floor.
The comment on the group to all this is: "Wtf?"
And another comment about fines for using the counter as a work station... nothing about isolation, planning, containment, inspection... and this is why they will continue to have problems.
When there is pressure like this on a site, the pressure causes mistakes. In this case it has caused delays and property damage. In other cases, it results in injuries and even fatalities!
This is to be avoided on projects at all costs.
