I welcome you to my blog and another wonderful edition of the Hive Learners' featured post. Life is really rigged against us as humans, especially those of us that were not born with any silver spoon, but it's funny how, despite how much life is rigged against us, it did not stop the expectations, both from family far and near and even friends. The moment an individual sets their eyes on you, whether someone you know or a stranger, they have expectations from you. Even though they don't say the word, from how they look at you, you already know they have a lot to say but are just holding back.
We live in a society and a world where we are offered nothing but expected to make something out of the nothing offered to us. We live in a world where those who could not do it expect you to do exactly what they could do, and those who have not achieved their dreams are putting so much pressure on you to achieve yours and see you as a failure if you don't. The moment you are not able to meet their expectations, you are seen as a failure, whereas they also did not even achieve half of what you achieved, but the fact that they are older makes them think they have a say.
I just hate conversations that have to do with "At this age you should have done this or you should have done that." Yes, I know I should have, but not being able to do it is not my will, but because I lack the resources to do it, and then you complain about how I have not been able to do it and offer me no help to get it done. Expectations are what pressure us and have caused a lot of people to slip into depression. Not everyone can take the pressure; some people are broken by very little pressure, while some can take more pressure than others. It is still not advisable to put anyone under any form of pressure because you don't know how they react to it.
For me, I think it is unfair how much is expected from us in a world and a system that does not favor us. Some of us had dreams and things we wanted to become as kids, but the world has caused us to drift away from those dreams, and we are no longer in pursuit of such dreams; rather, we just want to be alive and go with the flow because pursuing that dream of ours sometimes feels like swimming against the flow and current. You are expected to know what you want to be in a system that is working against you when your possibility of ever winning the system is slim. I feel that expectations and pressure are very unnecessary when it is clear that your chances of winning are small; rather, they let you try your luck but without the pressure and expectations.
Yes we all want to be great and no one wants to live a lowly life which means we all naturally would want to work towards becoming someone great which puts us under a certain level of pressure, but then this pressure is tripled when expectations are added to it. No one of offering help but they expect that you do it all by yourself.
