Review. Alejandro Dumas, a writer well known for being the author of The Three Musketeers and other novels, however the first book I read by the author was the Black Tulip, from the title I assumed it was a book of a horror plot, because I thought that It was figurative and not literal, until I saw that the author was Dumas and there I understood everything.
We begin the book in the Netherlands set in the seventeenth century, during the power struggle between Brothers Witt and Guillaume de Orange, where both brothers die at the hands of the crowd that supported De Orange, undoubtedly the bloodiest chapter of the entire book, as it describes how they were murdered, the inhabitants after beating them to death and one of them shot, then sold the pieces of bodies to the rest of the crowd, something without a doubt frightening. All encouraged by Guillermo, I was surprised because they clarify that he was a ward of one of the brothers.

Then we turn to the protagonist of the story, Cornelius van Baerle, a doctor with a fondness for botany, we can see how distracted and naive he is towards the problems that occur around him that surround him. The plot that encompasses the main part of the book begins when the “Société Hirticole” (The Agricultural Society) starts a contest where the prize is awarded to the one who manages to create a black tulip.
The doctor's neighbor, Boxtel, is also dedicated to botany but less efficient, he begins to spy on his neighbor, and when he sees that the doctor has a great advantage, he begins to sabotage him, throwing two cats tied to his garden and these They cause a huge disaster, one night the neighbor observes that the doctor managed to create said tulip, moved by envy he calls the police and tells them that Cornelius has suspicious material, that one of the Witt brothers gave him, since they were relatives , the police go and take the doctor prisoner since they found a package of letters from the deceased.

In prison he meets Rosa, the jailer's daughter, without a doubt the relationship between these two is one of my favorites, we see how he teaches her to read when she secretly visits his cell, how he talks to her about the tulips and more , Cornelius managed to take the tulip bulbs to prison and grows them secretly from Griffus, the jailer. We see that Baxter gets to where they are because when they arrested the doctor the first thing he did was go to his house to steal the black tulip bulbs, but when he did not find them, he followed the trail to the prison, he became close friends with Griffus, insinuating him. that he has romantic intentions with his daughter, but it is to be able to take the tulips.
In incident of all the bulbs that Baerle had, he only had one left, and he gave it to Rosa, so that she could grow it and claim the prize since the day of the execution is coming soon and there is no hope for him, he explains everything what is necessary for the tulip to bloom and she does everything to the letter, Boxter observes that Rosa has the tulip and just hours before it blooms she steals it and runs away to show it to the "Société Hirticole", Rosa realizing this goes after him and comes to the director of it, there is a small fight between her and the thief.
Coincidentally, it is the same day as Cornelious's execution, she takes out the sheet where the bulb was wrapped to prove its authorship and when reading it she realizes that it is an explanation of the Witt brothers where she says that the doctor did not know the contents of the package It was delivered to him, proving his innocence, she realizes it quickly informs the prince that he happened to be there.
We see how the contest event is carried out, with an exclusive parade for the tulip, and a huge audience, in some events Cornelious and Rosa end up on the stage being named the winners and at the same time the prince marries him, while Baxter goes into cardiac arrest dying of rage and jealousy.
The Black Tulip has become one of my favorite books, the narrative that Dumas uses makes the hook automatic, the description of the details and the development of the characters, this story made me cry, laugh and get excited like very few They have succeeded, I finished almost 300 pages in two days, and I continued with more books by the author since I am lucky to have most of them in my home bookstore. I haven't seen the movie yet, but I will see it soon
