I bought these bananas from the supermarket 1 week ago, and after 7 days they are just beginning to ripen. Even though they may look yellow, they are still quite hard, and they still smell quite green. Now I have 2 problems with this. The first, was that I was not able to eat these bananas throughout the week like I normally do. So although I have them, they are not fit for the purpose for which they were bought. A lot of people that I know visit the supermarket once per week, so if it is taking more than 1 week for them to be ready. It means that they should not be sold in this green unripened state. This isn’t the first time that I have bought bananas in an unripened state, but placing them in a dark cupboard, normally speeds up the ripening process to about 1 to 2 days. However on this occasion, this was not the case. Where I live in the UK, I cannot grow my own bananas, so the supermarket is normally the best place to buy them. So I have to take whats on offer, like in many other places, where the supermarkets dominate. The second problem I have, has to do with the health benefits of these bananas. I know that these bananas are imported from countries abroad. So they are usually transported while still green and sprayed with some type of chemical, to ensure that they rot less quickly. This then brings into question. The idea of possible side effects from these chemicals, and the fact that even when they become yellow, they are still quite hard, and they still smell green. So after waiting 7 days for my bananas to be ready. I am now unhappy since they have lost that natural taste and smell. I also wonder whether they have much health benefits at all now.
