Then the World Cup final came around, and everyone started asking who I was rooting for in the final. The truth is, the team I was rooting for had already been eliminated, so I didn’t have a favorite. Both teams had played really well, and either one could win. As far as I was concerned, it didn’t matter how the match ended, although I wanted Argentina to win because it’s a Latin American country, and besides, it was Messi’s farewell—and of course, a legend playing in his last World Cup, so as a Latina, you have to support him.
We decided we wouldn’t watch the game at home but at a mall. The downside was that we had to leave early, but we couldn’t because my son was getting off work late. Anyway, as soon as he got off, we left and arrived at 2 p.m. at the Parque Los Aviadores mall. We knew it was going to be packed, but we didn’t know just how packed, and honestly, it looked like a wave of people. There were way too many people in the mall and in the area where the game was being shown—there was no room for anyone. It was horrible; there was nowhere to sit. If you wanted to watch the game, you had to stand really far away.
We left the mall and were heading home to watch our games in peace, but then they called us to watch the game at another mall. They told us they’d saved two seats for us, so we agreed even though there were five of us. When we got there, we had those two seats, and then we managed to find two more, which was better. We started watching the game, and honestly, the first half was pretty lackluster, but what I did notice was that Spain was always in the lead.
By the end of the first half, my allegiance had already shifted—I wasn’t rooting for Argentina anymore, but for Spain. I liked the way they were attacking, and something I didn’t like was that the Argentines weren’t just playing badly—they were also hitting the other players and committing a lot of fouls. I thought that was in poor taste. In the second half, when Fernández got a red card, I was happy, since he was one of the ones looking for a fight the most.
I think Spain deserved to win and fought for what they believed in—and they won. Even after two very good goals were disallowed—the first for an offside call by just an arm’s length and the second for a foul that didn’t happen—justice was served, and Spain won without a doubt. I’m happy they were able to win after so much dirty play; it was great to be able to go watch the game somewhere else—we had a fantastic time.
