Pachuco01.webp

The illustrious shelled specimen thou seest at the top of this writing goes by the name of Pachuco; aye, one of the popular variants of Francisco.

He came to our chambers some three decades ago, as part of a gift bestowed upon the eldest of my descendants in the rural district of this municipality. Four in all were the shelled creatures who joined our brood at that time. My offspring, then in their tender years, chose to christen these hatchlings with the names of four characters from the realm of children’s literature: Leonardo, Donatello, Rafael, and Miguel Ángel. These they took from The Ninja Turtles. Come now, a morrocoy and a turtle do look alike! And besides, they were not yet of an age to know of the great artists of the Renaissance!

The uncertain fate of chambers with a garden, and their nearness to the roads along which folk of every sort pass, meant that in time we lost track of three of them. Owing to that strange custom of such creatures—to bury themselves for indefinite stretches in the thickest, most overgrown corners—we grew accustomed to losing sight of them for long seasons. Until one day we were forced to conclude, sadly, that three had departed to tread new paths, earthly or heavenly.

Only the protagonist of this sorrowful romance—a quasi-chronicle—remained; and, what is more, he had lost his identity, for since his fellows vanished, it had become a mystery what to call the sole survivor of so ill-starred a fate.

At last, in my capacity as lord and master of this humble abode, I resolved that he must be rechristened, for none may go nameless through these worlds of God.

In faith, as one goes about the daily round, one does not perceive how near at hand certain sentiments truly are!

Pachuco, for all his autonomy, emancipation, and independence, was wont to vex the matron by toppling the pots of ferns, wrestling noisily with the gate that bars him from our chambers, and leaving abundant portions of food, cast forth after digestion, which he scatters most ill-advisedly across the garden’s lovely grounds. In short, one might say he was something of a bothersome and unwelcome creature. Not to mention that, unlike the hound pack we keep, he wags thee not his tail, nor bows his head to receive a caress, nor rushes forth at speed to greet thee upon thy return from toil.

In my field labors, which, though I am a townsman, fall to me as the man of the house, it fell to my lot some days past to clear the channels that carry water down from the heights of a slope in the backyard. They are long, cemented channels which, running along the retaining wall, guide the water to the drains; yet through the harshness of the rains and exposure to the elements, they become wholly covered with earth, leaf litter, and plants that take root there.

From the heights, I began my task by moving the accumulated earth toward a corner of the yard that we have set aside for the decomposition of branches, leaves, and plant refuse. Thus is made the perfect mixture, that in time we may have well-nourished soil for the family’s gardening.

A full day’s arduous labor: shovel after shovel, sweat coursing over brow and chin, hands grown calloused…

Though Pachuco had shown his hard-shelled body, a few hours after dawn, he was nowhere to be seen by nightfall. Nor the next day, nor the day after. Then arose the fearful, foreboding question: had Pachuco ventured into that heap of grass and tangled branches in the corner, and thereby sealed his tragic end? Since the thought came to torment us well into the evening, we resolved to wait until the following day, when we would rouse our “village” for a thorough search, inch by inch, and scour every corner that might afford shelter and refuge to the vanished Pachuco.

Ye can well imagine that all memories of toppled flowerpots and excremental ornaments had vanished from our minds.

The day of the search for our character began in the early hours, yet bore no fruit. Thus the only course left was to begin digging into the mound that, four days earlier, my shoveling of the drains had raised.

Contrary to the natural pace of adventures, which begin swiftly and then slow, step by step, the deeper I thrust the shovel without result, the more swiftly came the next stroke, as I opened fresh trenches and hastened the longed-for discovery.

It is then that one understands most keenly the true weight of the earth, and how much of it may fit within a little trench. Shovel after shovel, and nothing; sweat took possession of my whole being, and my breath came hard. I, who am wont to be so unbelieving and skeptical, vowed that I would buy Pachuco a fern planter of his own to knock over every day, should he appear.

And at last, he appeared! Buried beneath immeasurable heaps of earth and the brittle branches he had chosen for a little hibernation, there he was. And he, who did not hold me in great esteem—for I am the one who keeps him from the door, removes him from the planter, and sends him to his corner—that day was glad to see me. I took him up, his body wholly covered in earth, his legs moving as though he swam through the air. I carried the trophy to show the family, who waited sorrowfully in the sitting room.

—Behold what I have found!

All looked upon him with joy in their hearts, while Pachuco greeted them, merrily waving his legs, with something in his wrinkled countenance that might be taken for a smile.

I would fain say this is a work of fiction, but nay: it happened just as it is told.
