I never imagined that Sunday morning would be the last time I'd see my grandmother with her hands covered in flour. There she was, as she was every week, preparing her famous cinnamon rolls while the aroma filled every corner of the kitchen. Without a second thought, we talked about everything and nothing: the neighbor who had painted his facade a garish yellow, the garden flowers that threatened to take over the dining room.

While she kneaded the dough, she told, for the umpteenth time, the story of how she met my grandfather at a village festival. We laughed together, just like so many other times, unaware that that laughter would be forever frozen in memory. Her eyes shone with the same light as always, her hands retained the strength that life had given her.

When I said goodbye, she held me tight against her chest and whispered, "Take care, my love." It was a hug like so many others, without me suspecting it would be the last. I walked toward the door without looking back, without that intuition that sometimes warns us of final moments.

Three days later, a heart attack took her in her sleep. Without warning, without agony, just as she would have wanted, but leaving an unfillable void. Now I understand that life is made up of moments we live without knowing they are farewells. Every roll I bake, trying to imitate her recipe, is a ritual that brings me closer to her, an attempt to recapture that Sunday when, without warning, love disguised itself as eternity to stay.
