A celebration of traditions [Esp-Eng]

There are events that remove your essences, that seduce you, that astonish you... Those that make you wonder how much you really know about your Creole root, about your contemporaries, about your own DNA. Events that are born to leave a mark, to make a difference, to give a headscarf to the routine and make their own the words of Nicolás Guillén, the National Poet of Cuba, when he said: "We have to volunteer."
One of these cultural events is, without a doubt, the Fiesta de Raíces y Tradiciones, the most important event organized every year by the branch of the Fundación Nicolás Guillén (FNG) in the province of Las Tunas, Cuba. This time, because of the difficult socioeconomic outlook in Cuba, no foreign delegations came. However, numerous writers, oral narrators, professors, researchers and other artists, from various Cuban provinces, are in Balcón de Oriente between 29 and 31 May.
Among the participants are Ury Rodríguez, president of the Provincial Committee of the Union of Writers and Artists of Cuba (UNEAC) in Guantánamo and actor with multiple results; Pedro Péglez, writer and journalist, Premio Cucalambé (tenth edition) and leader of the national group Ala Décima; and Yoandra Francisca Santana Perdomo, who commands the FNG in Camagüey and also works as a writer.
This quote gives vital importance to his theoretical space par excellence: the Colloquium de Presencia de Guillén, which has now reached its 15th edition. In this context, both at the FNG’s Tunisian headquarters and at the University of Las Tunas, valuable papers are shared that approach, for example, social inequalities, racism, the legacy of Guillén, the tenth national strophe of Cuba, to the culture of peoples like Costa Rica and many other matters.
This time the celebration is dedicated to Edilberto E. Agüero Rodríguez (Zabala) and his Estampas Tuneras, a popular figure who has marked the history of our territory. In addition, the program honors the 95th anniversary of the publication of the poem Sóngoro Cosongo, de Guillén, and the centenary of the birth of Fidel Castro Ruz.
Interesting have been the shared investigations, with an emphasis on the legacy of Zabala, whom Darlenis Urquiola, provincial director of culture, and other scholars, have wildly exaggerated, approaching stories and anecdotes not so well known.
For the children of this time to know that once the comparsa used an airplane as part of their presentations and other surprises, it is much less interesting.
The fact that the first child turns years old almost on the same day as the father and also bears his name and surname is curious, as well as the fact that the parent (carpenter as well as music aficionado) for a certain stutter registered one of his nursery school children Vrigilio, instead of Virgil, they are memorable things for the average Cuban.
In Las Tunas perhaps few people know who Edilberto Agüero Rodríguez is, but if we say Zabala, it’s already something else... Today the Zabalero Mayor is not among the living, but his children (from Adolfo Villamar Street No. 130, "their headquarters") keep the tradition alive through the Zabaleando project.
This event, in addition to varied and substantial artistic presentations (concerts, poetic recitals, exhibitions...), is conducive to deepening the idiosyncrasy of Cuban, Latin American and Caribbean. In addition, it favors the deepening around Guillén’s work. But it goes further. In the words of Yoandra Santana, sometimes we see him as a marble and we deprive ourselves of the common man, who liked rum, mulattas, irony, humor...
She told me, for example, how Guillén walked the streets of Camagüeyanas (her region) and people lined up behind him. Why does an artist achieve this?" she asks. And she herself replies: "Because people looked at him as if he were their family, someone great to love. If I were in Las Tunas right now, I imagine him smiling, close. He was a Cuban to everyone... I would be happy."
The author of poems such as Postales de agua (Ediciones Orto) and Brevedad de ser (Ediciones Ácana), also expressed: "He is one of the great authors of Cuba and the universe. If we look for the most translated Cuban in the world right now, it’s him. He is among the most read in the world. If there is one thing that defines who we run the subsidiaries with their name, it is that we are in love and defenders of their work."
That’s why being here is intoxicating. In book presentations, in the readings of poems full of stories, in the declamations that give us chicken skin, in the pictures with which we lose ourselves to another dimension, our Cubanicity is galloping. I agree with Yoandra, if Guillén were here she would be happy.
