Pro-Arte, a "sound birth" of Cuban culture [Esp-Eng]

On June 10, 1951, young artists and promoters of Las Tunas decided to form what would be "the most important spontaneous cultural movement in the history of this city", according to research. It was "a sound birth", as defined by Gilberto E. Rodríguez. This is the Pro-Arte Patronage, from which emerged illustrious names such as Alfonso Silvestre, Pablo Armando Fernández, Victoria Luisa Licea (Nego), Pedro Verdecie Pérez and Rossano Zamora Paadín.
"We weren’t a group that gathered to do activities, no; we were a family. We loved and respected each other," the author of The Belly of the Fish confessed one day. Meanwhile, Gilberto added in his work Pro-Arte in Las Tunas, a group worthy of praise (Award for the Best Journalistic Article Juan Cristóbal Nápoles Fajardo, 1955): "... has within our society a name and a prestige, which many of the institutions of this type in the capital of the Republic would like for themselves."
Certainly, in a context of extreme illiteracy, in which educational and recreational societies guaranteed the cultural life of the then Victoria de las Tunas, this entity was born, which had as triggers -as Sandra Mustelier put it in her book Pablo Armando Fernández y Pro-Arte en Las Tunas - "the inherited cultural tradition, the knowledge of the existence of Pro-Arte Musical in Havana, the lack of presentation spaces for local talents and cultural options for the population."
Thus, "concerned about the cultural advancement of their people" and eager "to show the artistic potentialities they possessed, they founded a Patronage". Rafael Al-Carrazana was the first executive president; other figures such as Zamora Paadín, Alfonso Silvestre and Victoria Luisa Licea also assumed this position.

THE VOICE OF A PROTAGONIST

Ena Vidal was ten years old when this confraternity was founded. It has been a long time since Isabel Luisa took her - by the hand - to her activities. Inevitably, he fell in love with that atmosphere.
"It was a revolution, an awakening in culture. The Echo of Tunas and other newspapers commented on its scope. Their shows defended roots, the process of transculturation, heritage, Cubania...; they honored libertarian struggles; they exalted the life and work of Martí... Pregones, peasant music, patriotic and romantic songs, Latin American repertoire, trova and more, in a time when not everyone had a radio", explains Ena.
It also means how revolutionary thought was generated within them and that - despite the differences of character - "they were united by a sense of belonging for their people, cultural projection and a profound vocation to Martius." The Rivera theater and other places witnessed its artistic quality.
She, now an octogenarian lady, remembers Alborada, a theatrical play daughter of the talent of Pablo Armando Fernández, about which El Eco de Tunas said "masterwork, with a conscientious libretto". It is a pity that this literary gem has been lost. But one does not forget the impetus of that budding writer, who at some point traveled abroad and returned, to put his knowledge at the service of this land; a creator who was the same artistic director, scorer, tango dancer or assistant in production. And that until one night in November 1952 he slept in the vivac of Victoria de las Tunas, together with Rafael Galindo, because the Batista forces locked him up for an "illicit collection". Against what he protested Pro-Arte.
This tunnel is reminiscent of Nego, whose house, very close to his own, was the core of the initiative. She always remembers devoted to the group and their piano lessons. Thus he paints with his voice to each of the members (impossible to mention them all) and reads a few words from Mustelier’s book that express: "Pedrito, 'the theorist'; Nego, 'the programmatic', and Rossano, 'the cultural rebel'."
Before she became a concert performer in the group, especially linked to singing and piano, she was fascinated by those young art enthusiasts who, without earning a cent, made curtains even with the drapes of their homes, met at odd hours, rehearsed and gave this city an unprecedented glow with musical, theatrical, dance, literary, plastic arts performances...
And there are events driven by the Patronage, from historical evenings, a great function for the centenary of Martí, their participation in the inauguration of Radio Circuito, celebrations for the Day of the Journalist, or actions at the Sons of Hiram lodge, as well as presentations in Jobabo, Manatee and other places. Although this movement disintegrated in 1957, "because of the convulsed situation of the country and internal political contradictions" (according to Sandra’s book), the sown seed continued to multiply among those who took part. For Ena, she turned her life into art and teaching, a universe in which - for almost 50 springs - she repeated many of the cherished lessons. "Those were sublime times. I learned to teach", concludes Neyda Barreras' niece, who was also a soprano and actress within the institution.

A CHILD MARKED BY EFFORT

"I was very small, but I will always remember with great affection that Alfonso Silvestre called me 'the youngest of Pro-Arte'," confesses concert master Félix Ramos, who at that time only sang, as the guitar came later in his life, in the early 1960s.
"Many rehearsals were done at the house of Nego, who was my singing teacher and lived in Francisco Varona street. But sometimes they were made at my house, in the 'Gonzalo de Quesada'. I remember that, although I was immersed in children’s games, I paid attention and for that, perhaps, I was involved in the group. "Through these paths, I had the joy of participating in presentations at the Rivera theater, the port of Manatí, Jobabo... And I made recordings on Radio Angulo," he says.
He narrates that his sisters Elba, Margot and Josephine were part of this movement, linked in some way to the theatre, dance and singing. "Felix was a child, but his sisters Margot and Elba, his aunt Irene and his cousins Rosita and Hebe contributed mightily to the making of Alborada, my first play," Pablo Armando would say to Iliana Mustelier years later. In that same interview, the National Prize for Literature would add: "Las Tunas soñada por Nego, Alfonso, Rossano, Pedro y todos los que contribuyeron a formar Pro-Arte, pasado medio siglo, alcanza un despertar irradiante cuando Félix Ramos se sumerge en la obra creadora de artistas que nos precedieron".
"That group left us with the responsibility for work and the love of art, without expecting anything more than applause from the public," says today the concert performer, among anecdotes that take him on trips to other territories, lying on his parents' legs, while filming the curl; dreams realized with efforts and help from this or that, and where everyone’s criteria mattered. Because the Patronage can still teach us, if we look back.
Remember that, as Ena said, "Las Tunas has a debt of honor to Pro-Arte."
