I've been watching several documentaries and short videos, all related to homelessness. After hearing so many cruel realities, I came across someone who was helping the homeless by offering them shelter, work, and food. It sounds fantastic, but they were talking about how those who accepted often ended up wanting to commit suicide, unable to bear the reality they had seemed to be escaping for so long. That's when I really started to understand the depth of this issue. Those who are homeless almost always live in the immediate moment, thinking about what they'll eat that night and not much else, that they have to go to a certain place to shower on a certain day, or simply thinking quickly about where to sleep tonight, in which plaza, on which city bench鈥攖he immediacy of survival.

The simplistic notion that offering homeless people these opportunities saves their lives can be contradictory. And don't think I'm saying they shouldn't be guaranteed these opportunities, but they also need support throughout the process. We need to consider why they ended up where they are, what they're escaping from, where they're fleeing to, and think much more intelligently about how to help them. Primarily with food, shelter, and work, but also by supporting them through this process, which for them is a return to the unbearable. Being able to think calmly makes us reflect on a past that led us to the streets, and that's where this problem also lies.

While offering food, money, and shelter helps in the immediate moment, there's also a systemic element driving them to this point, and we can't blame the individual who has been pushed to this extreme. The system that today suffocates us in constant struggle for survival, in which many are driven to the brink of destitution and abandoned by both their own families and the system itself.

If we continue to support policies where the lower classes suffer while paying for the enjoyment of those at the top, these things will continue to happen. Whether we donate, show compassion, give coats or food, they will continue to suffer because of the very foundation of this situation. We must fight and abandon the notion that a person living on the street is bad, a drug addict, or simply lazy, and instead consider the depth of each reality. Criticizing the individual doesn't help; instead, we must criticize the system that believes itself to be perfect but is rife with cruelty, abandonment, and greed.
