If you look at it, the generation that is growing up in this environment, my generation were not taught how to create the future but rather how to fit into the past, like most kids where I am from, I grew up uninspired, because it was if like, I get a degree and become a doctor, lawyer, engineer, or like so many others, I get a respectable job which allows me to pay the bills and get by.
I was told I couldn't be an artist because all this painters only get recognized when they are dead, I was told I couldn't be a writer because my book may never get published, they said you can't be a musician or a soccer player because only a few people make it and its just a fantasy that I would grow up of. We were brought in a circumstance which told us the only few certain means, if we'd ever be successful, and I believe that, simple because we there were never enough examples for us to look up to, it was never any examples in my environment of people who had found success by following their passions. I was told to "BE REALISTIC", that life is not a fairytale and you cannot be dreaming about things that are impossible. What is impossible? I often find myself asking this question.
Now let me say something, Parenting is not about having children lean on you but making leaning unnecessary. Your children are not your children, they are the sons and daughters of life's longing itself. They come through you but not from you, and though they are with you yet they do not belong to you. You make strive to be like them but seek not to make them like you. They have a compass, let them follow their own compass. Freeing you up to be your own person on your own time and allowing them to become who they are to become.
Steve Jobs once said: When we grow up, we tend to get told that the world is the way that it is, and that your life, is to live your life inside the World, and try not to get into too much trouble, and maybe get an education and get a job and make some money and have a family. But life, can be a lot brighter than that when you realize one simple thing, and that is, that everything around us that we call life, was made up by people that are no smarter than you, and you can build your own thing, you can build your own life that other people can live in.
Build a life, don't live one, build one.
