Greetings,
@theanimerealm community…
The new anime season kicked off a while ago, but today I’m here to talk about a story from the previous one. It might seem like more of the same, but I honestly felt the plot didn't deserve the manga's cancellation; anyway, I’m here to share my thoughts on it.
Black Torch
It premiered in early July of this year under the direction of Kei Umabiki, with 100studio handling the production of the work created by Tsuyoshi Takaki. Unfortunately, this action, sci-fi, and supernatural series failed to achieve the necessary popularity ratings or volume sales in Japan's *Jump Square* magazine; consequently, the publisher decided to cancel the series after just 19 chapters.
As for the plot…
The story follows Jiro Azuma, a rebellious boy descended from a lineage of traditional ninjas who harbors a unique secret: he possesses the extraordinary ability to speak and interact with animals. This peculiar gift constantly lands him in trouble as he protects vulnerable creatures, until one day he rescues Rago—a mysterious, badly injured black cat—from the forest. However, Rago is no ordinary pet; he is a Mononoke—an ancient spirit wielding devastating power—fleeing from a fierce faction of rival demons.
After the young man helps him, Rago’s pursuers ambush and kill him on the spot; in response, the spirit makes a radical decision: to fuse his spiritual aura and his own heart with Jiro’s body to bring him back to life. Resurrected and transformed into a hybrid with supernatural abilities, Jiro immediately draws the attention of the Spiritual Intelligence Bureau—a secret government division that recruits the boy and his reluctant feline ally to combat the paranormal threats lurking in the city. However, as the enemy's darkness threatens to consume everything and Rago’s true power fully awakens, a troubling question arises: can Jiro master the Mononoke’s overwhelming, destructive force to save the world, or will he be consumed—losing his own humanity—by the fearsome demon with whom he shares a heart?
Personal opinion
The anime doesn't feature a complex plot or anything that breaks the mold; however, it is entertaining. In my opinion, what truly brings the story to life—and makes it so enjoyable—is the interaction between Jiro and Rago, particularly thanks to the *mononoke*, who adds just the right amount of comedy and friction. The plot also avoids filler and gets straight to the point, which is praiseworthy; however, it does sideline elements that initially seemed significant—such as the protagonist's ability to speak with animals—which ultimately turned out to be of little consequence (or was at least portrayed that way). Later on, the ability seemed to lose its relevance and meaning, though perhaps this loose end remains simply because the story was never fully concluded.
Let's talk about the animation; while it may not be my personal favorite, it works well for the plot. The battle choreography, shadow transitions, and visual effects unleashed when Rago taps into his demonic power possess an impeccable fluidity; furthermore, the katana strikes and stealth movements feel both swift and weighty. As I mentioned at the start, the story is nothing new—though it does have its own style. Could it have been handled better? Certainly. However, we have to be realistic: the abrupt conclusion meant it never had the chance to reach its full potential.
Positive points…
- Well-executed art and animation: Character designs with a striking "urban ninja" aesthetic and highly fluid combat sequences.
- Dynamic pacing with no filler: A straightforward story—quick to watch or read—focused on constant action.
- Protagonist chemistry: Great dynamic of comedy and tension between Jiro (the impulsive human) and Rago (the bitter feline demon).
Negative points…
- Generic plot and characters: It recycles many common shonen tropes without offering any real surprises.
- Rushed pacing / Abrupt ending: As an adaptation of a cancelled series, the conclusion feels hurried and leaves loose ends.
- Lack of thematic depth: It fails to fully explore its moral dilemmas, consistently prioritizing spectacle over substance.
The score I give it…
6/10 Story │ 8.5/10 Animation │ 7/10 Sound │ 9/10 Character Design │ 7/10 Overall
A visually stunning, fluid, and entertaining anime—though one with flaws that might not appeal to everyone—it is nonetheless a highly enjoyable 12-episode recommendation if you are looking for straightforward entertainment, brutal ninja battles, and great art design without a complicated plot.

Saludos comunidad de
@theanimerealm…
