It has been October for a while now, and I haven't yet commented on any horror movies—or the season itself, for that matter—but that doesn't matter; it’s never too late. Especially now that the third installment of *The Mummy*—one of my favorite films starring Brendan Fraser and Rachel Weisz—has just been announced. I want to revisit the series, so I plan to bring you a look at each installment of the story week by week.

What’s the plot about?…

The story begins in Ancient Egypt (1290 BC), where the high priest Imhotep is having a secret affair with Anck-su-namun, the concubine of Pharaoh Seti I; upon being discovered, the couple murders the pharaoh. Anck-su-namun takes her own life, hoping to be resurrected by Imhotep, but guards interrupt the ritual; as punishment, Imhotep is subjected to the worst of curses—the Hom-Dai—buried alive alongside flesh-eating scarabs and condemned to eternal torment.

From there, the story shifts to 1923 and the life of Evelyn, a brilliant and witty librarian with an unwavering devotion to Ancient Egypt. Together with her carefree brother Jonathan, she acquires a mysterious artifact that reveals the exact location of the legendary city; to survive the perilous expedition, they turn to Rick O'Connell, a fearless and charismatic adventurer—a former French Foreign Legionnaire, if I recall correctly—who knows firsthand the secrets and dangers hidden within the dunes. During their expedition, they race against a group of American treasure hunters, and despite warnings from the Medjai—a secret order guarding the tomb—Evelyn reads a passage from the Book of the Dead aloud, accidentally awakening Imhotep. As ancient magic takes hold of the sands and evil threatens to consume everything, can a band of unlikely heroes stop an immortal monster before the entire world falls under his absolute dominion?

Personal opinion

Even though the movie came out three years after I was born, that didn't stop me from enjoying it as if it had just premiered—and it certainly aired frequently on television. While it actually scared me the first time I watched it, I grew to love it, especially thanks to the chemistry and dynamic between the actors—and who didn't love Brendan during his heyday? As I understand it, the film successfully captured the classic essence of adventure cinema—reminiscent of *Indiana Jones* or the old Universal monster movies of the 1930s—while perfectly adapting it to the pacing and visual effects demanded by the turn of the millennium. I really appreciate how the plot delivers the expected adventure formula but blends genres effectively: it features non-stop action, comedy, romance, mythology, and touches of Gothic horror.

As for the pacing, it is personally very well executed; the film wastes no time. From the opening sequence in Ancient Egypt to the arrival at Hamunaptra, the tempo builds steadily without giving the viewer a moment to catch their breath, yet it skillfully balances the tension with well-placed moments of comic relief. Furthermore, the visuals add significant value to the film. As I mentioned, the chemistry and performances were a major draw; each actor brought something genuine to their role, with Brendan redefining the 90s action hero. He isn't the typical infallible tough guy—he is brave, yet he also gets scared, improvises, and possesses an unforgettable sarcastic attitude. Rachel broke the "damsel in distress" trope, serving as the brains of the group; her passion for knowledge, courage, and intelligence are what truly save the day, and in this way, every character contributed meaningfully to the story's development.

Positive points…

  • Perfect chemistry: Incredible connection and charisma between Brendan Fraser and Rachel Weisz.
  • Impeccable pacing: Excellent balance of action, comedy, romance, and horror without ever losing momentum.
  • Epic soundtrack: Jerry Goldsmith’s score perfectly conveys a sense of adventure and mystery.
  • Great villain: Imhotep is an imposing antagonist with clear, memorable motivations.
  • Pure entertainment: A timeless film that is enjoyable with every viewing.

Negative points…

  • Genre clichés: It relies on classic stereotypes from adventure films and Ancient Egypt (which doesn't really bother me; I’ve always been fascinated by this culture—so much so that at one point in my life, I wanted to be an archaeologist).
  • Simple supporting characters: Some members of the expedition serve merely as "bait" for the Mummy.

The score I give it…

8.8/10 Story │ 10/10 Performances │ 10/10 Sound │ 8/10 Set and production design │ 8.8/10 Overall

It’s hard for me to imagine that not many people know this film; I consider it a cult classic of its era that was very well received and hasn't lost its touch over the years. What do you all think of this movie?
