By 9am my day looks effortless.
Wake up. Skincare. Prayer. Journal. Work. Content.
People comment “How do you do it?” “I need your discipline.” “Teach me your routine.”
I just smile and type back “God and consistency ❤️”
Behind the scenes, it’s 5:02am.
My alarm rang at 5. I snoozed it. Then snoozed it again.
I’m lying there in the dark in. Awka, negotiating with God like He’s my project manager.
“If I get up now, will you make today easier? Will the clients pay on time? Will I not feel like quitting by 2pm?”
The real version of me isn’t waking up motivated.
I’m waking up tired. My eyes are swollen and weak. My back hurts so much from sitting too long yesterday.
I don’t want to pray as usual. I don’t want to journal. I don’t want to be the “put together” person today.
But I do it anyway.
Because the 9am version of me has a Zoom call.
Because people are watching.
Because I told myself last night that I would show up.
“Behind the scenes” is making your bed even when you want to crawl back in and pull the duvet over your head.
It’s drinking water before coffee because you posted about “hydration” last week and now you have to live it.
It’s replying “I’m good, thanks for checking” in the group chat when you’re actually overwhelmed and haven’t eaten.
It’s choosing the hard thing when no one would know if you didn’t.
At 5:15am I’m in the bathroom. Cold water on my face.
I’m talking to myself in the mirror. Not the cute affirmations kind.
The real kind. “Get up. You said you would. You don’t owe anyone excuses. Just show up.”
At 5:30am I’m at my desk. Laptop open.
The house is quiet. No NEPA yet. Just the sound of my fan and my own breathing.
This is the part nobody sees.
Not the glow. Not the productivity.
Just a girl, tired, choosing herself before the world asks anything of her.
People see the results.
The neat desk in my pictures. The calm voice on calls. The “I’ve got this” energy.
They don’t see the 5am negotiation.
They don’t see me googling “how to stay consistent when you don’t feel like it” at 5:40am.
They don’t see the days I cried after sending the email because I was scared it wasn’t good enough and i was going to get rejected.
Last month someone DM’d me: “I admire how disciplined and consistent you are. I wish I could be like that.”
I wanted to reply: “I’m not disciplined. I’m just scared of letting myself down.”
But I didn’t. I said “Thank you, you can too.”
Because here’s the truth I’ve learned:
Discipline isn’t motivation.
Discipline is what you do on the days you have zero motivation and you do it anyway.
It’s ugly. It’s boring. It’s 5am and dark and nobody claps.
“Behind the scenes” is also saying no.
No to scrolling. No to “just 5 more minutes in bed.” No to the voice that says “you can start tomorrow.”
It’s choosing future me over present me, even when present me is begging.
By 7am the sun is up. I’ve prayed. I’ve written 3 pages in my journal that nobody will ever read.
Half of it is complaints. The other half is “God, help me.”
I’ve sent 2 emails. I’ve made my bed.
And now, when I post a picture at 9am with a caption like “Grateful for new day,” it’s not a lie.
It’s just the edited version.
I’m not sharing this to brag about waking up early.
I’m sharing it because I think we all have a 5am version.
The version that shows up before the world sees you.
The version that does the work when there’s no audience.
The version that keeps promises to yourself.
That version deserves credit too.
So here’s mine. No filter. No ring light.
Just me, at 5:02am, choosing to get up.
If you have a “5am version” too — what’s the thing you do behind the scenes that nobody claps for, but you know matters?
IMAGES ARE MINE💕
