BEING GOOD WILL NOT STOP RAIN FROM FALLING ON YOU.___WEEK119
For Hive Reachout Initiative 119 - "Being Good"
I used to think that if I am good, good things will happen to me.
If I help people, if I don't cheat, if I respect everybody, then life will be smooth for me. That was what I believed growing up.
But life taught me different.
I have seen good people suffer. My mother is one of the best people I know. She helps everybody in our compound. She borrows money to help people even when she doesn't have. But last year, she lost her shop. Fire burnt everything. People were asking, "Why her? She is so good."
I have also tried to be good. In school, I help my classmates with assignments. I don't gossip....... I try to be kind. But last semester, I still failed one course. I cried and asked God, "But I am trying to be good, why is this happening to me?"
So do I think being good should shield us from bad things? No. I don't think so.
Being good is not a shield. Being good is a choice. It is who you are even when life is not fair.
Fortune or misfortune does not check your track record before it comes. As they said in the prompt, it just comes. A good person can fall sick. A good person can lose a job. A good person can have heartbreak. It doesn't mean goodness failed.
The mistake we make is we think goodness is a transaction. "I did good, so life should pay me back with good." But goodness is not for sale. You do good because it is right, not because you want to buy protection from bad things.
What then should we do when bad things happen despite our goodness?
For me, three things help me.
First, I remind myself that bad times don't cancel my goodness........(yeah), One bad day doesn't make me a bad person. One failure doesn't erase all the good I have done.
Second, I allow myself to feel sad but I don't stay bitter. It is okay to ask "why me?" but after asking, I get up. I talk to someone. I pray.
Third, I keep being good even when it hurts. Because if I stop being good just because bad things happened, then bad things have won twice. They have hurt me and they have changed who I am. I don't want that.
At the end, being good will not stop rain from falling on you. But it will give you an umbrella of peace inside, so you can still walk in the rain without hating the world.
That is what I believe.
What do you think? Should being good shield us from bad things?
