Finding the Connections

Today, during a trip to one of the largest shopping malls right near my house to buy a birthday gift for my goddaughter, I found myself arriving well before the stores actually opened.

The mall was already open, and many couples, moving almost like zombies, were wandering through the aisles lined with stores on both sides—with the metal railings still in place below…

There was little I could do to make me feel less like being there, staring at nothing.

That’s when I looked up. It wasn’t even ten o’clock in the morning yet, but already a fabulous stream of natural light was pouring in through the generous, interlocking glass panels that make up the structure’s ceiling.

Truth be told, it’s anything but monotonous. It has nothing to do with the shopping malls of the ’90s that I used to visit as a kid. I only remember the enormous red carpet that stretched for several meters and led us to the two ticket booths that were open to sell tickets for the movies that would be shown that afternoon.

The smell of popcorn filled the air, rising in harmonious, sugar-rich wafts, setting our imaginations free just thinking that we’d be eating it inside soon.

In the end, the wait for the store to open wasn’t as long as I’d expected, and as I was photographing the glass ceiling, I began to hear the mechanism raising the gate at the main entrance of the store I intended to visit.
