That’s not what happens.
It’s never what happens to us.
It’s not what happens that will determine the quality or longevity of our lives.
It’s not what happens.
And the reason for this lies in the fact that what happens is, for the most part, common to all of humanity, with rare exceptions. It happens to everyone, or to the vast majority.
Yesterday, at the end of the day, the sun set for everyone, and this morning, it rose for everyone.
Just like a simple event that takes place every day—even if we desperately wish it wouldn’t happen—so it is with the rest of life’s events.
The same thing—or occurrence or event—can happen to two different people, and each person may experience a different outcome. One of them may become richer (in monetary, intellectual, social, or other terms), while the other, on the other hand, may become poorer, in the same terms.
And why is that? Why can the same event cause or lead to a myriad of different responses and different outcomes?
It has nothing to do with what happened—or what didn’t happen—but is closely correlated with what we did, whether intentionally or not. And that—that key, that small detail, which has nothing to do with its importance—triggers or inhibits a series of other interconnected events that cause things around us to change or remain the same.
The question shouldn’t be, “What can be different?”
If you change everything within yourself, everything will change for you.
You don’t have to change what’s outside of you. That’s usually not part of who you are, nor is it your responsibility.
You only have to change what’s within you. Not the place or the circumstances, usually.
To have more, we just have to become better.
We shouldn’t wish for life to be easier; rather, we should wish to become better people.
We shouldn’t wish for fewer problems, but rather for more skills and qualifications.
We must start working on ourselves by making these personal changes. Only then will the (outer) world change for us. Only by changing the world within ourselves will the outside world change accordingly.
... as simple as this.
... as hard as it gets.
