I was on my way from Delhi to Churu, Rajasthan, staring out of the window and taking photographs. There were many such small brick huts along the railway tracks in Delhi.
It was around 9 a.m., the bath time: people were washing, others were waiting for their turn, while some men were defecating by the tracks - I saw a dozen from the window. I can only guess how those huts solve the problem of toilets, considering they have only ladders to reach the second-floor rooms. Probably, they only have pots and then throw the contents away at some spots.
But this isn’t the very bottom of society. People living under plastic-sheet roofs in damp areas are in an even worse situation. You can see such shelters in Delhi, too, including from the train window.
