Today I am traveling to Delhi for a couple of days. My sister works for a bank and she got a transfer to Delhi for 2 years. Government jobs are good as well as painful. These uncertainties are always there. As such, her home is in Ahmedabad city, but she keeps getting transferred every few years to a new city. This particular transfer was extremely painful for her. It's very far from home and long-distance travelling. Anyways it's her job and now she has few years for retirement so she does not want to shift to a new company at this stage. Also, the retirement benefits will be lost if she quits her job.
To give her company and lift her mood up, we all decided to travel to Delhi for a few days and be with her. It's going to be a family gathering, which will be her family and mine. I am already at the Airport and waiting to board the flight.
It is after a long time that I am again travelling to this city. I have never been fond of this city much because of the safety issues for a woman here. While I was working in TCS and Accenture back here in Mumbai, I used to travel often to Delhi for work. I used to travel to other cities also, and it was always fun travelling. But Delhi always felt a little different. The very first time I had travelled to this city, I was not aware of the road directions, and that time Google map was also not there. The rickshaw fellow took me round and round from my place of stay to the office. He kept on taking me in circles. After a point realized that I was passing the same street for the third time....haha.
My office had its own accommodation facility, which was in an enclosed society, after 8 I would not dare to leave my room, it would all get so quiet outside and it always felt very spooky to venture out alone on the streets once it got dark. In other cities I would step out for dinner, explore the city even at night time after work, but in Delhi I would be indoors most of the time, and I did not have any friends also there. I would always try to run away from there at the earliest. While not many fond memories are there of this city, I am still looking forward to visiting this place because this time it's with family and my nephews and nieces are going to be there, who I am looking forward to meet.
While Delhi feels unsafe at times, there are good things also about this city, like the shopping part. There are some local markets where excellent choices of Indian wear are available and since now the festival season is starting, I want to do some Indian wear shopping. Let's see how the trip goes, I will share updates of my experience in the city this time in my following blogs.
