From my pile of leftover fabric, I created magic again. Okay, not magic, it's not perfect but I'm very happy with how this bralette turned out. Bralettes are typical bras but without the support. They can be worn as undergarment, over pants/skirts and even layered over tees or worn to the beach. I intend going to the beach soon so I thought about making a bralette myself.
The Making
I made the breast cup pattern on paper using my measurements but you can actually skip this whole process if you don't know how to draw patterns. All you need is to trace out your cup pattern from your old bra or bralette.
I cut out the cup pattern on my fabric, two for each cup and then joined the pieces together.
I made two shoulder straps using the length from my shoulder to underbust + 6 inches. 13+6 = 19. I placed the strap at the top edge of the cup, in between the two pieces and sewed round to get a neat finish.
Using my underbust circumference of 33 inches, I made a band to attach the cups to. I pinned each cup to the midpoint of the band and sewed.
Next, I attached the other end of the straps to the back of the band. I pinned the strap 3.5 inches from the end of the band. Although it is wrongly pinned in this picture, I made corrections.
I folded in the cups and straps neatly in the band so I could close the band from the inside.
I simply pulled inside out when I was done.
For the fastening, I made tiny straps to serve as loops and pinned to the end of the band.
The Finished Look
I noticed the straps were about 2 inches too long so I shortened it. I'm thinking about making it as a dress next time in sheer fabric for a summery look. What do you think about my first attempt?
