In this post, I will be sharing with you how I made a two piece outfit that is a sleeveless top with shoulder straps and matching shorts using a yellow and white striped cotton fabric.

The outfit is for a Nursing school student who was passing by my shop when the beautiful designs I displayed on my mannequins caught her attention. She liked the designs that I displayed so she came in to talk about a possibility of making an outfit for her. She showed me the style she had previously saved from Pinterest and we concluded on how to bring the dress to life for her. I took her measurements, discussed about the cost of fabrics and cost of making the dress and also the delivery time.

I started her work a few days later but there was some challenges I faced in the process. The major challenge was lack of power to do the overlocking stitches popularly referred to as weaving in this part of the world, to give the edges a neat finish. I started the work with my manual sewing machine, so the lack of power delayed the work. I had to wait till I have made quite a number of outfits so that I can purchase fuel and do all the weaving at once.

Materials Used

  • 2 yards of yellow and white striped cotton fabric
  • Elastic
  • Adjustable circular brooch buckle
  • Matching thread
  • Measuring tape
  • Tailoring chalk
  • Scissors

Measurements

  • Bust – 36"
  • Shoulder – 14"
  • Underbust – 30"
  • Bust line – 14"
  • Waist – 36"
  • Half length – 17"
  • Top length – 20"
  • Shorts length – 20"

Step by Step

  • I started by drafting the pattern for the sleeveless top on the fabric using the bust, shoulder, underbust and top length measurements.

  • Next, I cut out the front and back pieces and was carefully to follow the direction of the stripes on the fabric.

  • Next, I cut out the shoulder straps from the fabric which will be used to connect the front and back of the top to give it that amazing sleeveless look.

  • Next, I joined the front and back bodice pieces at the sides and attached the shoulder straps on the back piece. I then secured the armhole area and finished the edges of the neckline neatly. 1000589015.jpg

  • Then, I started working on the shorts by drafting out the pattern using the customer's measurements waist (30"), shorts length (20").

  • Next, I cut the front piece and back piece and I also made sure the stripes are well aligned with that of the top.

  • Next, I joined the front and back pieces together by sewing the crotch and inner leg to start seeing the shape of the shorts. Then I joined the sides and used my measurement tape to confirm that the two legs were of equal size.

  • Next, I cut out a strip of the fabric to make a waistband. I used 36" length and 5" width (then folded to 2.5" and created room for elastic). I inserted the elastic and secured it properly to enable the shorts sit well around the waist. 1000589019.jpg

  • Then I did the finishing by folding the edges and stitching the hems neatly.

  • After that I looked out for any loose threads and any area that need adjustment. Then I wore it on my mannequin to check the fitting and also take photographs.
