FREE SPEECH - A TOOL FOR SELF-EXPRESSION

INTRODUCTION

Having heard about the free speech initiative brought up by @theycallmedan, I have decided to be part of this initiative to pen my thoughts as it is importantly worth fighting for.

Parrhesia an ancient Greek word meaning 'free speech' or 'to speak candidly' is one of the most important democratic values that date back to ancient Greece. What it means to people differs considerably around the world.

WHAT FREE SPEECH MEANS TO ME

Wikipedia defines free speech as a principle that supports the freedom of an individual or a community to articulate their opinions and ideas without fear of retaliation, censorship, or legal sanction.

I define free speech as an entity that supports an individual saying his or her mind without fear of being sanctioned.

In our society today, freedom of speech is gradually being lost, our society is being crippled by the limitations of this freedom. Despite all of this I still believe in the democratic idea it holds and the urgent need for it to be saved.

DO I BELIEVE FREE SPEECH IS WHAT SAVING?

Yes! I believe free speech is worth saving.

Let's take our minds back to the abolition of slavery, civil right, sexual liberation, and countless other freedom, all these were gained through freedom of speech. Free speech also gave the likes of Martin Luther King and other civil leaders the ability to challenge the status quo and make history. In essence, free speech is a panacea for nation-building and development, so if not for anything, for the growth of a country and the world at large, I strongly believe free speech is worth fighting for.

Free speech gives room for free communication of ideas, opinions, suggestions, and expression. As such, it is one of the most precious rights of every man.
Every citizen may speak and write with freedom, but shall be responsible for such abuses of this freedom as shall be defined by the law of the state.

CONCLUSION

Free Speech no matter the form is what major key of self-expression and it is one right that should be respected in every civilized and democratic setting.

It is worth noting that we should not stay silent and overlook the fact that our right to free speech is being infringed upon, rather we should all rise in support of the fight to save free speech.
