Zambezi Diaries
D31: Banana Trees & Unexpected Lessons
🍌 Today’s entry is all about bananas—but trust me, it’s more interesting than it sounds.
Beneath the leaves of a banana tree, I found surprise, memory, wisdom, and even a glimpse of marketing genius. Here's what happened.
🪨 Stone vs. Banana: Who Wins?
This morning, while walking past the back garden near our compound, I spotted a massive bunch of ripe bananas hanging low—easily half a meter long.
A friend offered to grab a knife, but I decided to keep it wild: found a sharp rock, aimed, and—boom! Down it came, clean and perfect.
There’s a kind of satisfaction in using what’s around you. Tools are nice, but sometimes, all you need is instinct and a good rock.
👴 The 125-Year-Old Banana Seller
Photos 2 and 3 take us back to Christmas two years ago (December 25, 2023), during a field visit to Nigeria. We were invited to the home of a local employee’s family.
There we met an elderly man who claimed—quite proudly—to be 125 years old. He sold us some of the largest bananas I’ve ever seen, straight from his backyard.
There was something sacred in that exchange: banana for story, smile for warmth. These weren’t just fruits—they were legacy, laughter, and life.
🏬 Market Magic: Bananas That Dance
The final photo was snapped at a local market in Mozambique. Vendors string up banana bunches so they sway gently in the wind, like golden pendants catching the sun.
It’s not just display—it’s instinctive marketing. The colors, the breeze, the effortless rhythm… sometimes, the best branding comes from the streets.
🌿 Final Thought: A World in a Bunch
Today reminded me: food is never just food.
A banana can be a story, a bridge between cultures, a lesson in adaptability, or a gesture of kindness.
It connects us—to land, to elders, to strangers in open-air markets.
💬 Have you ever had a surprising moment involving food or fruit? Drop it in the comments—I’d love to hear it!

Cheers!
