I watched a movie last night where a lady unlocked her phone right in the dark. I have always wondered how that could be possible when there was no light reflection on her face.

I always think Face Unlock is just the phone trying to check my picture. But it has a technology that is behind it which is far more interesting than that.

All the phones we have vary with grades; that is why some are more advanced than the other with the use of a special system that projects thousands of tiny and infrared dots that are not invisible on our faces. Our phones carefully read those dots that fall across our face, from the nose, forehead, jaw, cheeks, and other facial features built around the phone to map out our faces.

And now, the way I think of it is making a 3D map of a project, let's say a building, but the time, the building is our face.

After that, the software installed on each phone for that and the AI then compares it with the already facial data we entered during the first facial scan. If the details mark the required percentage, the phone is unlocked.

And here is the part that caught me by surprise recently: depending on the type of phone or how advanced it is, even in a complete darkness, the feature can work. This works as a result of the infrared light on that phone that is not visible to our eyes.

So at night when we might be struggling to search for our phone where we might have kept it, the phone might still recognise us before we do.

But there is something we need to pay attention to: not all phones can do this or can work at night. Some works are based on the ordinary front camera, which can be less secure due to the less information and details it has about our actual facial appearance.

The tech we have in this age is more advanced than taking pictures. It now follows patterns, measures, decides for us within a few seconds and even compares. And to think, all these things happen when we direct our phone's front camera at our face.

Now tell me, can your current phone recognise your face even when it is totally dark?
