If you are someone who always pay close attention to details like me, you would have noticed how a iron, wooden or plastic spoon always looks broken or bent if placed inside water, especially when you are looking at it through a transparent glass cup.
And it becomes more strange when you you remove the spoon and it looks perfect unbent or broken. So, what is going on when placed in a water?
What is witnessed is known as refraction of light.
When lights moves from one material to the other, I changes its direction, such as from air into water. Because of the changes that took place in the water, the spoon will always appears different from where it actually is.
The spoon is perfectly okay, it hasn't bent, and the water did not do anything to it. What we always see is as a result of how light always travels differently through materials.
And when we look at some swimming pool sometimes, if we haven't entered, they always looks very shallower that they really are. In that case, the light always comes from the bottom of the pool then travels through the water into ari, and that is why when we look into the pool, it appears not to be deep.
Imagine something as simple as putting a spoon in your drinking glass can teach you a lesson about how light behaves. Isn't that amazing?
I am sure I am not the only one who has experienced this illusion of spoon and water, or is there anyone who is yet to notice that?
