It was first flown in combat during the Spanish Civil War, proving superior to all other fighters at the time until it met the British Spitfire in 1940. Light and fast, it had a superb climb rate and devastating 20mm cannon as part of its armament. It suffered from takeoff and landing problems due to its narrow undercarriage and had limited fuel capacity and cockpit visibility. It was updated constantly until the end of the war in 1945.
