Izmir Clock Tower ~ İzmir Saat Kulesi

Welcome to one of the most magnificent structures located in Izmir, Turkey. In my last post, I stated that I was traveling towards here. Here we come to that exciting day. Being here gives me peace. Pigeons soaring from the sky, children chasing after the pigeons with what they bought from the bait sellers, and a clock tower built as if reaching for the sky with the sun behind it, everything from its architecture to the area and the attention it attracts is magnificent. Located in Konak Atatürk Square, this clock tower has become the symbol of İzmir for more than a century. According to the information sign, this magnificent structure was built by the Sultan of the Ottoman Empire II. It was built to commemorate the 25th anniversary of Abdulhamid Khan's accession to the throne. The architect of the İzmir Clock Tower is the French-born İzmir architect Raymond Charles Péré. As far as I know, Péré is in İzmir, Karşıyaka and St. He also designed an eye-catching Catholic church called Helen's Church. If I get the chance, I would like to introduce the Helen Church to you. I think this man must have devoted himself to building magnificent structures in Izmir. As I saw these structures and researched the legendary architect behind them, I started to like Péré. There are many clock towers built to meet the needs of their periods in almost every corner of the world. In fact, perhaps the most popular of these is the Big Ben Clock Tower in London, England. However, Izmir Clock Tower is more beautiful to me with its architectural structure, original touches and magnificence. For some reason, this clock tower seems a little more symmetrical to me. According to what I heard, the clock of this clock tower was also given by the German Emperor II. It was gifted by Wilhelm. I know that there was an emotional and strategic bond between the Ottoman and German governments and their rulers at that time. I think this clock tower carries a visible proof of that bond to the present day.

İzmir, Türkiye'de bulunan en muhteşem yapılar birine hoş geldiniz. Geçen postumda buraya doğru yolculuk yaptığımı belirtmiştim. İşte o heyecanlı güne geldik. Burada bulunmak bana huzur veriyor. Gökyüzünden süzülen güvercinler, yem satıcılarından aldıkları ile güvercinlerin peşinden koşan çocuklar ve güneşi arkasına almış göklere uzanırcasına inşa edilmiş bir saat kulesi, mimarisinden, bulunduğu alana ve çektiği ilgiye kadar her şey muhteşem. Konak Atatürk Meydanı'nda bulunan bu saat kulesi yüzyıldan fazla bir süredir İzmir'in sembolü haline gelmiştir. Bilgilendirme tabelasına göre bu ihtişamlı yapı Osmanlı İmparatorluğu Sultanı II. Abdulhamid Han'ın tahta çıkışının 25. yıl dönümü anısına inşa edilmiştir. İzmir Saat Kulesi'nin mimarı Fransız asıllı İzmirli mimar Raymond Charles Péré'dir. Bildiğim kadarıyla Péré, İzmir, Karşıyaka'da bulunan ve St. Helen Kilisesi adında yine göz alıcı Katolik bir kilisenin mimarlığını da yapmıştır. Fırsatını bulursam Helen Kilisesi'ni de size tanıtmak isterim. Sanırım bu adam kendini İzmir'e muazzam yapılar inşa etmek için adamış olmalı. Bu yapıları gördükçe ve arkasında duran efsane mimarı araştırdıkça Péré'yi sevmeye başladım. Dünyanın hemen her köşesinde dönemlerinin ihtiyaçlarını karşılamak adına inşa edilmiş bir sürü saat kulesi bulunmaktadır. Hatta bunlardan belki de en popüler olanı Londra, İngiltere'de bulunan Big Ben Saat Kulesi'dir. Ancak İzmir Saat Kulesi, mimari yapısı ve özgün dokunuşları ve ihtişamı ile bana daha güzel geliyor. Nedense bu saat kulesi bana biraz daha simetrik geliyor. Duyduğuma göre bu saat kulesinin saatini de Alman İmparatoru II. Wilhelm tarafından hediye edilmiştir. O zamanlarda Osmanlı ve Alman hükümetleri, yöneticileri arasında duygusal ve stratejik bir bağ olduğunu biliyorum. Sanırım bu saat kulesi o bağın gözle görülür büyüklükte bir kanıtını günümüze taşımış oluyor.

According to my family, who visited Izmir Clock Tower years ago, people used to use the clock tower to meet. In other words, this place was a common meeting point for lovers or groups of friends before touristic visits. Since large buildings were rarely seen in those times and this is one of the most beautiful squares of İzmir, it has become a symbol of meetings. Of course, there is also the matter of looking at the clock while waiting. It must also be a little exciting to rush to be there on time and see the time from afar.

Bundan yıllar önce İzmir Saat Kulesi'ni ziyaret eden ailemin anlattığına göre eskiden insanlar saat kulesini buluşmak için kullanıyormuş. Yani burası turistik ziyaretlerden önce sevgililerin veya arkadaş gruplarının ortak buluşma noktasıymış. O zamanlarda da büyük yapılara çok az rastlandığı için ve burası İzmir'in en güzel meydanlarından biri olduğu için buluşmaların sembolü haline gelmiş. Tabi bir de beklerken saate bakma olayı da var. Tam saatinde orada bulunmak için acele etmek ve uzaktan saati görmek de biraz heyecan verici olmalı.

Would you look at these engravings, the structure of the marbles? Its geometric shapes fully show the Ottoman Architecture. In other words, if I had seen this structure in a place other than my beautiful country Turkey, I would have thought it was an old Ottoman structure. Although it is not possible to tour inside for now, I am sure that the same details are included in it. In my opinion, this clock tower is the most elegant among the towers built during the Ottoman period. The fact that a few palm trees accompany this clock tower adds to its beauty.

Yani bu yapıyı güzel ülkem Türkiye dışında bir yerde görseydim, eski bir Osmanlı yapısı olduğunu düşünürdüm. İçini gezmek şimdilik mümkün olmasa da aynı ayrıntıların içinde de yer aldığına eminim. Bence Osmanlı zamanında inşa edilmiş kulelerin arasında en zarifi bu saat kulesidir. Birkaç palmiye ağacının da bu saat kulesine eşlik etmesi güzelliğine güzellik katıyor.

Watching the sunset gives a different peace in almost every corner of İzmir. However, I am witnessing the sunset for the first time in Izmir Clock Tower. The pigeons that flew around us a few hours ago are already home. The clock tower and the sun stand alone. As the sun goes down, this magnificent structure reveals itself like a woman with her hair dancing in the wind and with the sun behind her. The palm trees around it accompany both the smell of the sea and the red color of the sun.

Güneşin batışı izlemek İzmir'in hemen her köşesinde ayrı bir huzur veriyor. Ancak İzmir Saat Kulesi'nde güneşin batışına ilk defa şahit oluyorum. Birkaç saat önce etrafımızda uçuşan güvercinler çoktan yuvasına dönmüş oluyor. Saat kulesi ve güneş baş başa kalıyor. Güneş batarken bu görkemli yapı saçları rüzgarda dans eden ve güneşi arkasına almış bir kadın gibi kendini gösteriyor. Etrafında bulunan palmiye ağaçları da onunla birlikte hem deniz kokusuna hem de güneşin kızıl rengine eşlik ediyor.

As a result, we are witnessing history here. I tried to photograph the clock tower from every angle to be more detailed. I was there until sunset. I was wondering how the Izmir Clock Tower looked as the sun went down. Frankly, I enjoyed a bit of this vitality and peace. That's it, dear friends.
