The road of the dead
Road trips are usually the ones I enjoy the most. I usually listen to music while driving my old red truck, a '95 Ford F100. Feeling the sun coming through the window is undoubtedly one of the greatest pleasures along with the wind caressing my face.
However, strange situations have happened during sunset. I swear that more than once I have seen in the rearview mirror someone standing in the middle of the road, carrying a rake in his hands and when I turned around, he was no longer there.
Lately I have heard all kinds of stories, some involving the occult, others simply about criminals trying to take advantage of those who drive this road. To tell you the truth, I don't trust anyone anymore, not even my own shadow.
I kissed my wife and hugged my children, and then left for a neighboring town to stock up on food and supplies for my family. I left at about 12:40 noon, perhaps hoping to arrive in time to at least have a snack with them. I usually scour the town from beginning to end, perhaps looking for the best deals possible. They say that he who seeks finds, so I was surely going to spend a good bit of time there wandering around the place.
During part of the way I felt a little weird, saliva was running down my throat as if it were sand. I felt a little heavy and my forehead was sweating, but I didn't feel any fever or any kind of illness that would make me worry enough to think about stopping. After the first ten kilometers that strange feeling seemed to go away.
I continued the trip without any problems and tuned the radio in the hope that they would play some country music, one of my favorite styles. All I could hear was interference and some choppy voices of which I couldn't understand a single word. I took from the glove compartment of the car a cassette that I had there and I kept looking for a few moments at the revolver in the back, which had the drum with its six bullets ready to shoot.
As I drove along thinking about the situation in which I would use that gun, the more I became convinced that it had been a bad idea to acquire it. The music gradually isolated me from the uncomfortable thought that was circulating in my mind. As I turned my attention to the road I spotted a middle-aged man on the side of the road waving for a ride. It had happened to me many times to be on his feet, so I decided to stop and give him a ride.
—Can you give me a ride to the next town? My motorcycle broke down. There should be a mechanic there. —The man asked as he waved to that distant place.
I had plenty of room in the truck, so I got out and we loaded the motorcycle together, hoping to get it fixed by a mechanic in town. Since we were going in the same direction I didn't worry at all, I was just doing him a favor.
He told me all sorts of things about his life. He seemed like a very cheerful guy who couldn't keep quiet. I tried to listen to him and nodded my head approvingly, until at one point he stopped talking. I assumed he had fallen asleep, so I didn't intend to disturb him in any way. But it was then that I felt the weight of his body on me.
I brought the van to a screeching halt, marking the wheels on the pavement, and noticed that the person accompanying me had no signs of life. But something alarmed me even more, because I felt a nauseating stench as if his body was decomposing as fast as a needle takes to go around the clock. I had to get out, I couldn't take it anymore.
And there I was, spinning around in meaningless circles. Thinking about what to do and above all what kind of explanation I would give to the police if I found someone dead. I could simply explain the truth, but I knew that every detail would be questioned, and the can of beer I had offered him would surely be taken into account to say that I had poisoned him with some kind of strange substance. I decided to do what I never imagined.
Under the sun's ray I set about burying his dismal body in a shallow cavity in my opinion. The sun was intense but every time the clouds blocked its rays, I felt I could continue this monstrosity I was doing. I dragged his body and threw it into that hole with the intention of ending this nightmare.
Suddenly a very sharp buzzing sound hit my ears making me fall down. My eardrums seemed to explode and I became completely disoriented. When I came to, I felt something grabbing my feet and pulling me towards that horrendous pit I had made for myself. I held on with my fingernails tearing at the earth and managed to escape to the van in search of the revolver.
My hand was shaking at an accelerated pace. I was afraid, my body was shaking uncontrollably expecting something or someone to attack me at any moment. I fired a single warning shot and noticed total silence. I grabbed the keys and started the truck accelerating as if I were a deranged madman.
From the wheat fields that were on either side of the road more of those strange subjects began to emerge, who at first glance seemed to be dead. Their bodies were totally pale and a dark red to purple goo seemed to drip from them.
I did not expend one more bullet from the revolver I had with me for one and only one reason. My return home awaited me; with my family waiting for my return.
