It's a strange truth that if a cat can't see you, it thinks you can't see him/her. Or is it really that they're just trying to lull you into a false sense of security and they're actually just pretending?
I observed this phenomenon in my ex's father's cat, named (imaginatively) Black Puss. He (and his brother Ginger Puss) knew they were not allowed to sleep on a particular mat in front of the couch (where the humans wished to put their feet without getting tons of cat fur on them). Yet, they would often try to get away with it anyway. (And who could blame them? The mat was also in front of the wood stove, so nice and warm.)
Anyway, there was a time, when I remember watching Black Puss deliberately settle onto this mat. But he did it with his back towards us - as if by not seeing us, we could not see him being naughty!
The ginger male cat we had (Helith again - featured last week as a kitten) tried the same thing - despite the fact that he was not doing anything wrong.
Or maybe he just didn't like the flash...
