For a time, we were catless. My eldest had bad asthma and the cats received the blame until they were no longer around and he was still having attacks (turned out to be food-additive allergies.) After a rather bizarre episode in our family's life, it became clear that we needed cats in our lives again.
I always had difficulty finding kittens in England, especially since the charities control the pet market quite suffocatingly - and will generally not rehome their precious felines with a family who have children (they don't ask the obvious question - whether you've had cats before - just simply refuse.)
After some searching, we found a pair of ginger brothers. As seems appropriate for cats, we normally try to give them deity or royal names... So, this handsome fellow was named Helith - after a Celtic sun god.
Helith was definitely a ray of sun who might just bite if you look at him wrong (something one of my sons loved to encourage!) He was also a bit of a protector. While his brother (Herne) would scour the forest (or wherever) for interesting things, Helith would stay at home and look after us.
One time, we had the meter reader around... Now, this house, for some stupid reason, the electric meter was above the kitchen cupboards requiring a step stool to get to (especially for me, who is quite short.) They would never fail to send a short man around to read the meter... So, I'd get the step stool out for him to stand on...
I went out a few minutes later to see how he was getting on...
Helith had decided he needed to keep an eye on this man. He was sitting ON the poor man's feet!!!
Helith disappeared in 2012, shortly before we moved from England to Wales. His brother (semi-feral by then) also failed to return about that time too. I had heard rumors of people taking ginger cats... or maybe they finally failed to navigate some of the busy roads. Or maybe they didn't want to move to Wales.
