Two days ago I was made to understand the importance of one of the blessings we often overlook, or should I say downplay, in our lives, and that's the blessing of good health. Many of us don't even appreciate it because we feel it's something we always have, but if you've seen someone who lacks it or has had it interrupted in your life for a while, you'll know what I'm saying. It's not like I don't usually appreciate mine, but that day I get a reminder of it and how a simple disruption in our health can lead to lots of things that'll affect all our body systems and peace.
You see, two days ago I didn't sleep early because I had a long day at work, and so I was watching a movie late at night. When suddenly felt a rumble in my stomach. I thought it was simple stuff, but before I knew it, it was becoming something else, and so I had to rush to the toilet, and that's when I began vomiting nonstop until I had vomited everything I ate the previous day. I thought that was all, and after cleaning up, I was on my way out of the toilet when I felt pressure, so I went back to stool, and then I realized it was a watery one. To cut the long story short, I was frequently going back to the toilet for the next hour to stool, and when I was becoming weak, I had no choice but to wake my wife up.
Initially I didn't want to disturb her sleep and that of our daughter because she had a long day sewing and catering for our daughter, but when I feared the worst happening while she slept, I quickly woke her up. That was when I realized it was something relating to either food poisoning or diarrhea. I wanted to make homemade ORS, but we don't have sugar, and that led to prolonged visits to the toilet from around 1am to 4am before I could get a decent sleep. The frequent vomiting, stooling, sleeplessness, and weakness were really exhausting; all I wanted was just for my body to return back to normal, but that seems like a luxurious thing to ask at that time.
Thankfully I'm fine now, but I was made to understand and realize how much our everyday life depends on some things we don't even think about at all. Because after that incident I was afraid to even eat, drink water, and do the like, and that's because I was afraid of falling into the same sleepless situation and weakness. Sleeping peacefully and having energy to do anything I want at my own time is something I've further learned to be grateful for after this experience.
And that's why I'll end this by saying, "Yes, I know many of us often pray for money, success, and the like; we shouldn't forget to always pray for good health and also be thankful for it." Let's also make sure we take good care of our health, appreciate our body, and make sure we visit the hospital regularly to check up on our health status, because when you understand the importance of what it means to lack good health, you'll never take a normal day for granted again.
