There was a time when I believed good health was something I could always count on. As long as I could wake up, go to work, chase my dreams, and care for my family, I assumed my body would always cooperate. It wasn't until I began to see people around me struggle with illnesses that I realized how easily we take one of God's greatest gifts for granted.
The truth is, many of us only appreciate good health when we lose it. We spend countless hours pursuing money, success, and recognition while neglecting the very body that makes those pursuits possible. We skip rest, eat carelessly, ignore exercise, and live under constant stress, believing we can always recover later. Unfortunately, "later" sometimes comes with consequences.
I have come to understand that good health is not merely a personal achievement—it is a blessing from God. Every heartbeat, every breath, every step I take is evidence of His grace. Without good health, even the greatest wealth can lose its value because it becomes difficult to enjoy the blessings we have worked so hard to obtain.
The Bible reminds me that my body is not truly mine. In 1 Corinthians 6:19-20, Paul writes that my body is the temple of the Holy Spirit. That means I have a responsibility to honor God by taking proper care of it. Caring for my health is not vanity; it is an act of stewardship.
Scripture also reveals God's desire for His children to live in health. 3 John 1:2 says:
"Beloved, I pray that you may prosper in all things and be in health, just as your soul prospers."
This verse reminds me that God is interested not only in my spiritual growth but also in my physical well-being. Health and spiritual prosperity are not enemies; they complement one another.
Another passage that challenges me is Proverbs 17:22:
"A cheerful heart is good medicine, but a crushed spirit dries up the bones."
This teaches me that health is more than what I eat or how often I exercise. My emotional and spiritual condition also affects my physical well-being. Holding onto bitterness, worry, and anxiety can rob me of peace, while joy in the Lord strengthens both my heart and body.
Jesus Himself demonstrated God's concern for health throughout His earthly ministry. He healed the sick, restored the blind, cleansed lepers, and strengthened the weak. His miracles remind me that God cares deeply about human suffering and values wholeness.
I believe one reason people underrate good health is because it is invisible when everything is working well. We celebrate promotions, new houses, expensive cars, and academic achievements, yet we rarely stop to thank God for healthy lungs, a strong heart, clear eyesight, or the ability to walk without assistance. These everyday miracles often go unnoticed.
As I reflect on my own life, I realize that taking care of my health should be one of my priorities. Eating balanced meals, staying physically active, getting enough rest, drinking water, managing stress, and spending time in prayer are all ways I can honor God with the life He has given me.
Good health is one of the greatest forms of wealth. It allows me to serve God effectively, love my family, pursue my calling, and enjoy the blessings He has provided. I do not want to wait until sickness comes before I appreciate this priceless gift.
Today, I choose gratitude. I choose to care for my body as God's temple. I choose to value my health just as much as I value my ambitions, because without good health, many dreams become difficult to pursue.
May we never take for granted the blessing of waking up healthy each day. Instead, let us thank God for every new morning and commit ourselves to living in ways that glorify Him with both our bodies and our spirits.
