You know what? A lot of us take things for granted, or let me say, we see some things as normal. And if life has not taught you otherwise, you won't appreciate it. You really need to ask some of us that life has shown shege, we will tell you how appreciative we are that we're still here and doing fine.
Things like waking up and getting out of bed, walking around easily, eating without issues, not experiencing pain, eating any meal of your choice, sleeping peacefully in whatever position you feel like. Just to mention a few, to some of us, we know better. There was a time in life when I needed support to walk; you can't just leave me to walk. I can't even do that by myself. Also, you can't leave me to sleep by myself, not as if I'm still a kid, but with what I'm going through at that time, no one could just afford to take their eyes off me. I mentioned being able to sleep in whatever position too. I said that because for months I was only sleeping on a side; I couldn't turn, lay flat, or sleep any other way. These are things I don't take for granted now that I have the liberty to sleep any way I want. And talk of food too; there are still some foods I like you can't see me eating to date, not because I wanted it, but because my health refused it.
You think they are little and are ordinary; well, to me it is not. I have spent enough time, and when I say enough time, I'm talking about years. So, I've spent enough time in the hospital to understand that good health is not something we all get easily. I remember the first time I made some walk, alone. It was less than twelve steps, but it felt like an achievement. So, today when I wake up, I'm grateful; when I eat, I'm glad because I remember times when I'm off food for weeks. Today, I can step out, talk with people, laugh, and all, and no one even knows things I've gone through and the scars I'm covering in there.
And it won't be good of me if I don't appreciate my family too. I know I've been grateful to God, and I will always be. But the people I'm surrounded with as well are heaven-sent. Don't even say, "Of course, family will always stand by you;" I've seen otherwise in the life of a fellow patient, everyone left on me after the other till he was alone and finally lost his life. But mine, they stood even when it seemed all hope was lost, even when I had stopped fighting, and I saw every reason to not give up. A big thank you to my family. If you have good and genuine people around you, you will understand the kind of blessing that they are.
It's good to be grateful, honestly. Because life has its own way of teaching us appreciation. And that's why we most times appreciate things or people after we've lost them permanently or temporarily. I lost good health temporarily, and within those years it felt like forever; that's why I'm very grateful today. So whatever it is you have, be grateful for it. Some wished they could have or experience just half of it. Don't look at the ones you don't have or are still working towards; appreciate that which you have today.
