I was surfing around YouTube a bit, listening to some songs while watching the video's.
I ran into this song covered by Placebo, "Running up that hill" , a song original by Kate Bush.
First of all, I never did really pay any attention to Placebo, but darn what a great band Placebo is. The are (from my perspective) a great festival band with a great live sound. Ater the Placebo version of Running up that Hill I listened again to the original from Kate Bush. Together with David Gilmour. It brings back memories, during my youth it was a big hit. Just as "Don't give up" together with Peter Gabriel.
I admire the way Kate Bush sings so naturally. Like it is no problem at all to sing those tones.
With the ease she sings....wow... And, of course it's a great song.
Another cover I really love is "Stop" performed by Joe Bonamassa. This song has gotten a great bluesy feel. This recorded this song in de early days of his awesome career. With the recording he has some great musicians surrounded.
The original song is sang by Sam Brown, the daughter of Vicky Brown. Also this song was a big hit somewhere in my youth. She has a more jazzy approach with her voice. It was big hit in the Netherlands.
This song it probably "not done" to cover for a lot of people. In a way I can understand this, but the version of Korn is so energetic and 'huge', I can't resist it. It's the typical Korn sound but you recognize it from out of a million. The great thing is that the arrangement is fully intact but sounds so "korn"
I've been to the Pulse tour in Rotterdam, together with my brother. I still remember the goosbumps when "Another brick in the wall" was played... The song is such a powerfull one. Timeless....
As some of you may know I love Corey Taylor a lot. The Slipknot and Stone Sour frontman has such a awesome voice and he is so musical... His solo shows, acoustic, are just as awesome as a Slipknot show, He plays a lot of covers.. This one (Wicked Game) was a song I listened on the "Love ballads" Cd's when I was about 15 or 16.
The original song is one of Chris Isaac's his greatest hits. Chris Isaac was a big star during the late eigthies early nineties. He has a great warm voice with a country kind a style.
Some fact you always will remember :) Chris Isaac used to be a boxer. Don't ask me how I know... Some DJ revealed it and I still remember it :P
The next cover was big hit while it was already a cover. Chris Cornell, he passed away way to early. Het committed suicide. Sad that he obiously didn't see any way out anymore. But his version of Prince's "Nothing Compares to you" .... It's stunning...
The original is by Prince, although most of you will know it as a Sinead O'connor song. She had a massive hit with it. She has a unique voice and way of singing. This song and performance has to be listened with the volume max...
This next one is again a Chris Cornell version of a big hit. Billie Jean by Michael Jackson. He totally re-written the arrangement and it gives such a other dimmension to the song. It makes it a dramatic, melancholic kind a song.... What a great musician he was....
The original is (of course) of the king of Pop, Michael Jackson. More uptempo, with his unique way of performing.... I saw him twice live and it is a real experience with a great show and dito band.
Unimagineable the impact he had on the music industry. If you watch this clip you see Elvis-like behaviour of the audience. He was for sure on of the biggest artist of all times..
I hope you enjoy these covers and originals as much as I did selecting and watching them :) It was again a great musical evening,
Have a great night ,
Peter
