This morning 1400 tractors left for our political capital The Hague. The reason is the measures that the government wants to take to combat and reduce nitrogen emissions.
Last week it was decided that on various motorways the speed would be reduced to reduce emissions, farmers would be bought out of their farms and a number of other measures.
Farmers have been very concerned about the environment since the 1990s and have already achieved enormous reductions in several areas. They have had to shrink the livestock and they have already taken many environmental relief measures, and yet this profession is again the first to be designated as a major polluter.
The very strange thing about it is that civil aviation is totally spared. Schiphol (the Netherlands' largest airport) can still grow 5% per year instead of shrinking. Now I can understand that for cargo, but I think holiday traffic should pay more for what they pollute with their holiday flights.
Pollution is a global problem, that is one thing that is certain, I just think we should tackle it with the whole world. Individual promotions are of course good but are only a fraction of the big problem. And as long as this is not seen as a single problem and is tackled, it will be a difficult solution.
I understand the farmers, they really feel that they are the only target group that has to bleed for something that we all cause together. In addition, the package of measures that is now being maintained is only good for an improvement of 2% compared to the current situation. Of course, all bits help, but do it proportionally.
At this moment the rush hour is considerably disrupted by all the tractors on the road, I hope for the farmers that it makes sense and that they are listened to.
I do hope, however, that all of us now consult each other and treat our planet differently. For us, our children, grandchildren and far beyond.
