58 years ago, humans first orbited the Moon. The 1960s were a fascinating time.
Just think, half a century before the first space flight, humans had just lifted off from Earth in tiny plywood airplanes. And now another half century has passed, people have created the Internet, mobile computers and smartphones, and are once again getting ready to fly to the Moon.
When I was in school in the 1980s, I thought people would soon be flying to Mars and starting to live there. But 40 years have passed, and we're once again flying around the Moon. What have we been doing all this time?
1968, black-and-white televisions in our grandparents' homes. And they're watching live as a giant rocket blasts off toward the moon. I took this photo from Wikipedia, for 1968 it was an amazing giant that took off more than once.
And so the year 2026 arrived. In a month, a spacecraft carrying four astronauts will launch into lunar orbit. This will be a planned mission, before humans land on the Moon and establish a base there.
These people will fly around the Moon for the first time since 1972.
And we, a few of the 8 billion people, will watch this flight with interest. You might ask me why, compared to 1968, so few people will watch this flight? I'll tell you: there are so many other interesting videos on TikTok and YouTube now :)
