Going to the Moon doesn’t make Mars easier

A lot of people say going to the Moon makes Mars easier. It doesn’t.

Not automatically. Not the way that sentence usually gets used.

There are actually two claims tangled together.

One: the Moon as a waypoint - stop, refuel, then on to Mars.
Two: the Moon as a testbed - learn how to live and work off Earth before the long trip.
NASA’s Moon to Mars work treats the Moon as gradual build-up. Foundational exploration. Long lunar stays as Mars analogs. Live and work on another world when abort is still measured in days, not months.

Some of what they say transfers:

  • surface power pathfinders (including fission toward crewed Mars)
  • life support, dust, mobility
  • communications and navigation risk reduction
    Physics first. Starship-class paths refuel in LEO, or make propellant on Mars. They do not need a lunar petrol station on the way. Musk, Jan 2025: going straight to Mars; the Moon is a distraction - mainly against lunar refuel / waypoint thinking.

Environments differ hard:

  • Moon: vacuum, mostly propulsive landing
  • Mars: atmosphere, aero entry, heat pulse, dust storms, CO₂ ISRU

Zubrin’s long critique still has merit: Moon-first (especially Gateway-shaped Moon-first) can become a tollbooth. The Moon only helps Mars if you fly Mars-relevant hardware. Moon-only kit means you start over.
Jan 2025: Moon = distraction; straight to Mars.
Feb 2026: priority on a self-growing lunar city on a shorter clock (frequent launch windows, ~2-day trip) while still talking Mars city start in ~5-7 years - and still Earth-Mars direct, not Moon-Mars, because the Moon is not needed as a gas station.

So: lunar settlement interest ≠ lunar waypoint to Mars.

The hardware difference people skip: Moon Starship ≠ Mars Starship

Cousins. Not twins.

Moon / HLS-class:

  • no atmosphere - mostly propulsive landing
  • hard problems: vacuum precision, dust, crew access
  • Earth return often via Orion in Artemis; the ship may not be your crew Earth-reentry path (may change in Starship V4)
  • rendezvous in NRHO / Gateway / Orion space

Mars lander-class:What a successful lunar Starship landing actually proves:
Raptors. Steel ship. Near-Earth surface ops. Some crew systems.

What it does not prove:
Mars aero. Mars heat pulse. Mars ISRU return.

Shared factory and engines help the company. The flight regime mostly does not help the Mars vehicle.

Scorecard

  • Moon as refuel/staging for Starship-class Mars: mostly no
  • Moon as ops testbed: partially yes, if deliberately Mars-forward
  • Moon as political path: maybe for NASA; risky if it never pivots
  • Moon-only hardware sink: makes Mars harder
  • Same silhouette, Moon then Mars: helps the rocket brand, not because the Moon taught Mars gravity and aero

Result

While going to the Moon may help test some things, it doesn't really make going to Mars easier. It has its own value, as does Mars - maybe it's best not to confuse them - and get to Mars sooner.

Testbed. Waypoint. Distraction.
Hopefully not a glitch in the matrix.

  • aero entry + heat shield do most of the braking
  • hard problems: EDL heating, atmospheric guidance, dust storms
  • Mars-Earth usually wants ISRU methalox closeout
  • direct Earth-Mars, no Gateway needed

And programs maximize jobs. An Artemis program that never pivots to Mars vehicles can burn the decade without buying you Mars.

Musk nuance (because the quotes moved)

NASA’s Mars Architecture folks have called the Moon an outstanding testbed - pretty critical before Mars. Fair enough, maybe.

Side B - the Moon doesn’t help (Mars-direct frame)

The first is mostly wrong for Starship-class ships. The second is only partly right, and only if you are deliberately flying Mars-relevant payloads.

Side A - the Moon does help (NASA’s frame)
