Is burning the american flag ok ? is it legal ? are there any punishments ?
This friday at my American History class we discuss the case Texas v. Johnson and the comments I hear were intriguing so i decided that i was going to share my thoughts and some of my classmates' thoughts.
In many countries burning their flag is consider illegal, you get time in prison by doing so. the first case of burning the flag was in texas when Gregory Lee Johnson burned an American flag outside of the convention center where the 1984 Republican National Convention was being held, he was arrested and sentenced based on a texas law which said that burning theU.S. flag was illegal.
The case soon enough went to the supreme court which ruled that burning the flag was protected by the first amendment, freedom of speech, therefore legal to do.
In my opinion burning any flag is moraly wrong, people have die cause of that flag, lifes ruined trying to protect that flag, but I believed in the first amendment therefore if I see someone burning the flag as a protest I'll be mad, but I would not take any action agaisnt them. Is this a big price to pay for our freedom ? please commnet .
