Hypertension is another name for high blood pressure. The heart pumps blood into blood vessels, which carry the blood throughout the body. Blood pressure is the force exerted by the blood against the walls of the blood vessels.

Normal blood pressure is 120 over 80 mmHg , but hypertension is higher than 130 over 80 mmHg.

Unmanaged hypertension can lead to a heart attack, stroke and other problems. Regular blood pressure testing can helpful to avoid the more severe complications.

Hypertension is dangerous because it makes the heart work harder to pump blood out to the body and contributes to hardening of the arteries, or atherosclerosis, to stroke, kidney disease, and to heart failure.

Lifestyle adjustments are the standard first-line treatment for hypertension.
