Today's post is solely focused on our character and how much it's shapes us on a long run.
There are many things in life that money can buy. You can buy a beautiful house, a good car, expensive clothes, and even earn a name that people recognize. But there is one thing money cannot buy for you, and that's good character.
I have come to understand that who you are when nobody is watching is more important than the image you show people outside when everyone is watching.
In Nigeria, it is easy to get carried away by appearances. Someone buys a new car and suddenly everybody starts seeing the person differently. Someone moves into a big house, dresses well, or starts making money, and people begin to respect them. But I believe the real test is not what you have. It is how you behave when you have the opportunity to take advantage of someone and nobody would know.
For me, character shows in simple things.
It is keeping your word even when it is inconvenient. It is admitting when you are wrong instead of looking for someone else to blame. It is treating the person who cannot help you with the same respect you give someone who can put money in your pocket.
Sometimes, we focus so much on achieving our goals that we forget the kind of person we are becoming along the way.
What is the point of making money if everyone around you is afraid of you? What is the point of becoming successful if the people who know you closely cannot trust your words or benefits from you?
I have also learned that promises are easy to make. We can tell someone, “I will do it,” “I will come,” or “I will pay you back.” But what really matters is what we eventually do. Our actions give meaning to our words.
Nobody is perfect. I am not perfect either. There are times we make mistakes, disappoint people, or say things we later regret. But having good character also means being willing to acknowledge those mistakes and do better.
I want my family and the people around me to remember me not only for what I achieved, but for how I treated them. I want my children to learn from the way I live, not just from the advice I give them.
Because one day, the money may be gone. The fame may disappear. The possessions may belong to someone else.
But the character you built will continue to speak for you.
