Hello Hives,
There is something about life that I have come to understand as I grow older: and that's the fact that mistakes should not define us; but they should shape us into better people.
If I am being honest with myself, I have made so many mistakes in my life. I have made decisions I later regretted, and there have been moments when I wished I had handled certain things differently. Sometimes, I look back and wonder why I did not think more carefully before taking some steps. But that is life. We don't always get everything right the first time.
One thing I am grateful for, though, is that I have learned from many of those mistakes. Some lessons came easily, while others were painful. There are things I understand today that I did not understand a few years ago, and I believe some of that understanding came from the experiences I went through.
I have realized that making a mistake is one thing, but refusing to learn from it is another. We can spend years blaming ourselves for something that happened in the past, but will that change anything? Absolutely No. The past has already happened, and there is nothing we can do to rewrite it.
What we can do, however, is learn from it and make better decisions moving forward.
I am not saying that we should deliberately make mistakes because we want to learn. Of course, nobody wants to experience unnecessary pain or regret. But when we make mistakes, we should have the courage to admit where we went wrong instead of pretending that we did nothing wrong.
I personally have learned that admitting your mistakes does not make you weak. In fact, I believe it takes courage to look at yourself honestly and accept that you could have done better.
Another thing I have learned is not to judge people too quickly because of their past. Sometimes, the person who made a terrible mistake yesterday might be the person who has learned the most from that experience today. People can change, and everyone deserves an opportunity to become better, provided they are truly willing to change.
Of course, this does not mean we should keep accepting the same bad behaviour from someone who refuses to learn. There is a difference between making a mistake and repeatedly doing the same thing without caring about the consequences.
Today, I am still learning. I have not figured everything out, and I know there are still things I need to improve about myself. But I am no longer interested in allowing my past mistakes to make me feel like I cannot do better.
My mistakes are part of my story, but they are not the whole story.
I cannot change the person I was yesterday, but I can work on becoming a better person today.
