Who Am I When No One Is Watching?

When no one is watching, I’m still me. I’m that easy-going young lady who loves being honest. I’m not saying this to give myself an accolade; I’m saying it because this is truly who I am.

I am truthful with or without someone watching me. I believe this is partly because of the way I was raised. My parents always advised us to tell the truth, no matter the circumstances. I can never take what does not belong to me, whether someone is watching or not. I also do not need someone watching me before I do the right thing or show kindness to others.

People may see me as happy because I always put on a smiling face, but they don’t know the pain I’m dealing with. I remember when my shop was broken into by thieves and they carried away all my goods. When I arrived, I could not cry; I just stood there while others were crying. But when I got home, I cried for days. People called to ask how I was, but I told them I was fine. This made me realise that I can appear happy and strong on the outside while secretly hurting inside.

I can admit my mistakes boldly and take responsibility for my actions. I know I am not perfect, and I make mistakes, but I am willing to learn from them.

If my private actions were displayed publicly, I would want them to show someone who is learning and growing because I am trying to become a better person every day.

And I’m proud of the person I am becoming, the person who gives people a shoulder to lean on and puts others before herself. I want to be a humanitarian. In all we do, we should practise good character, not because we want others to see us, but because that is what we ought to do. Be yourself. Image from my camera
