I believe community service is a good idea for secondary school students, Community service can offer lessons that're hard to learn in a classrooms, we all know that education is not just about reading books , passing tests and earning certificates, Children also need to learn important things as they grow and one of those is caring for other people and the environment around them.

Sometimes when we talk about education we focus much on grades and forget about the people these children become, a student can be very smart have grades and still lack basic kindness, respect and consideration for others, I believe community service can help build some of these qualities.

For example schools can organise activities where students clean their surroundings , visit orphanages help people, plant trees join environmental sanitation or assist in community development projects, these may seem small, they can teach students a lot.

Imagine a student who has never cleaned a space because they think it is someone else’s job, When that student joins sanitation they may start to understand why keeping their surroundings clean matters, they may even become more mindful about how they dispose of waste.

Another student who visits an orphanage and spends time with children who lack the privileges may start to appreciate what they have, sometimes a long speech about gratitude is not needed when practical experiences teach the lesson better.

However I do not fully agree with the idea that students should lose their graduation opportunities if they do not take part in community service, I understand why it is made compulsory, but I think there should be a better way to handle it.

Not every student comes from the wealthy background, some students have health problems, family responsibilities or financial situations that make certain activities difficult for them, some parents may not even have the money for transportation to activities outside the school.

Does that mean such students should be denied graduation after years of studying and preparing for exams? I do not think that is fair.

Schools should make community service part of their activities but they should also give reasonable opportunities for every student to participate, students who miss an activity for some reasons should be allowed to make it up.

Another point is that community service should not become an opportunity for schools to exploit students or turn them into workers, the purpose should be to teach responsibility, kindness and teamwork not to punish them with labour.

At the end of the day I believe the goal of education is to prepare children for life, not exams, we need people who understand that the world does not revolve around them and that sometimes helping someone without expecting anything, in return is a beautiful thing.

So yes ..... I support making community service compulsory in schools but I do not support using graduation as a threat, let students learn the value of giving back through guidance and practical experiences, all the best lesson is one that they understand and carry with them even after leaving school.
